We're Still Kids

Sky's POV

It was 5 A.M.

November 3rd.

And the entirety of the army was outside, throwing on armor, getting food, sharpening swords.

I was nervous. I couldn't lie about that.

I was nervous because I knew for certain that not everyone would survive.

Ty ran up to me, wearing armor that actually fit him. The last time I had seen him wear armor, it was too big and he was always tripping over flat grounds.

"You ready for this?" He asked me.

I sighed. "Nether no. But it's got to happen eventually, right?"

He nods. "Don't worry, Sky. It'll be okay. We can make it through this."

"Ty, people are going to die. It's not going to be okay whether we win or lose." I say.

"Yeah, people are going to die. But we knew that when we started this, didn't we?" He says, looking me in the eye. "We knew what would end up happening when we started. Ssundee even warned us."

"Yeah, but Ty, we were just kids. We thought it would be like a game when we started."

"Have you forgotten that we're still kids? Sure, we've seen some things that no kids our age should have to see, but that doesn't mean we're not kids. I'm twelve. The rest of you are fourteen. That qualifies as kids. The only one who's truly not a kid is Red, because she's eighteen." He has a good point.

"Ty, just promise me something this time."

"Yeah?"

"Don't go out too far again, okay? We all know how that turned out last time."

His face is grim. "Yeah. I won't. Learned my lesson."

"Yeah. Last thing we need is you back there again. We couldn't find that damn base no matter what we did."

"I know." He's silent for a little bit. "You know I don't blame you for that, right?"

"You told me that when you showed up in my room as a hologram. Thanks for the shock, by the way." I give him a small smile, which he returns.

"You're welcome. It was the only way I could contact you."

"You know, I've been meaning to ask you, how did you even do that?" I ask.

"Do what?"

"Project a hologram version of yourself into my room. How in the Nether did you do that?"

He laughs. "Squids are stupid, that's how. They left redstone and metal all over the place. I just had to figure out how to piece it together."

"That's still a really advanced redstone thing." I point out.

He shrugs. "Not like I had anything else to do."

"True." I agree.

"Well, I guess I'll see you on the battlefield. Kill a few squids for me, okay?"

I laugh. "You got it, Ty."

He runs off to go talk to Lily and Josh, who aren't coming along. Red didn't want to risk it. They're ticked off about it, but they finally said okay.

I think about what Ty said. He's right, of course.

We're still kids.
