Monday was awkward.
I drove 10 minutes early so I could get a seat in the common room, only to see Matthew was already there, in his usual spot;l: far left corner. I sat next to him.
"Hey. You alright?" He asked, but before I could answer, Jenna and Max hastily sat down on the seats opposite us.
"Ooo. What's going on here? How was your little date on the weekend?" Max smirked, Jenna giggling along side her.
"Shut up." Replied Matthew.
"Ben seems awfully quiet..." Jenna laughed as she turned to Max. "We know you two were out, we saw it on the snap map."
"It was a family meal Jenna. You always have to make things something they're not don't you?" Matthew snapped back at her.
With her mouth open and eyes wide, she looked shocked, causing tears to well up in her eyes ever so slightly. She still liked him of course.
"C'mon." Said Max. "Let's leave them to it."
I was thankful they finally left.
"Don't take any notice of those two." Whispered Matthew in my ear, the warmth of his breath tingling against my neck.
"Yeah, it's just annoying you know?"
Max had known Matthew for years, since they lived so close and nowadays were old enough to work at the same pub together, The Stone Mason's Leg's. She always had the confidence to speak to Matthew, with Jenna tagging along at her side like a stray dog.
No one knew we were together in that way, even after Jenna and Max's rude remarks - who would believe them?
