Your POV
Ah, that's our classroom.
My eyes did their inspection over the entrance, a navy door with a window carved in its upper half (all doors were the same), allowing passers-by to see the state of the room. My heart drummed in trepidation, not knowing what to expect. I didn't dare peek through the glass—no, not yet.
Right as I walked towards the door, Jean trailing behind me, I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath. Relax, I told myself. What bad things could possibly happen on the first day?
My eyelids receded and the world once again opened before me. Just as I closed the distance between the door and I, a figure suddenly appeared in front, making me slam into the person full-on. I collided with the stranger's schoolbag, chest kissing the school crest emblazoned on it.
The person stumbled forward, a white folder plummeting to the floor.
Thwack!
I recomposed myself while the stranger whirled around. Sheets of paper shot out of the pristine binder, and words instantly tumbled from my lips.
"Oh no I'm so sorr—"
"Pick it up." Three syllables of utter demand. Cold and apathetic. I blinked at the unexpected inhospitality, mouth hanging open—caused by both the unfriendliness and the appearance of the stranger.
Standing before me was a boy who sent shivers down my spine. To think that the reception lady made me unsettled... what a joke. Right now, this male...
There was something about him.
The boy was all impassivity: hooded slate-grey eyes; dark brows; undercut hair parted in raven bangs; mouth a thin, humourless line. His unreadable gaze emitted an aura of nonchalance... but it was this laziness from his eyes that made me feel strangely intimidated.
"Oi, you heard him! Pick it up!" another voice, boisterous and feminine, echoed from behind. A girl with green eyes and russet pigtails sauntered up beside the black-haired boy, slightly shorter.
I snapped out of my musings, mouth closing as I dropped to the floor, piling the papers back inside the file. The girl spoke again, whispering to the guy. "Hey bro, how was that? Did I sound cool?"
"Tch," he responded.
Dark polished shoes slipped into the edge of my vision, and a familiar voice rebounded off the walls. "I'm really sorry – please excuse (Y/N), it's her first day at the school."
My brows knitted together. What was it with Jean's formality? And the two strangers' attitudes? Am I missing something?
Coiling to my feet, I handed over the folder, in which the cold boy quickly snatched up, fingers brushing off invisible flecks of dust. With that, he turned his heel, opened Room 27's door and stalked in, a slight breeze brushing past. The olive-eyed girl continued down the hall, whistling loudly to herself.
I stood there stiffly, trying to process what all just happened. "Who are they? Who is he?"
Jean pulled the short sleeve of my uniform blouse and dragged me aside, out of earshot. "They're people you do not associate with, (Y/N). They sit on the top rung of the ladder. No one stands in their way—especially Levi. He is extremely, if not the most, popular guy in our grade. What you did just then... You might as well just ruin all the rules."
What the heck—
"Wait-wait. I'm confused. What are these rules?"
The ashen-haired boy blew out a breath. "There's sort of a code for our grade. No one ever says it, but there's definitely one. The way I put it is that we have a popularity spectrum – one end being the most popular, the other being unpopular.
"We—well I am—on the unpopular end. Levi, for instance, is on the total opposite. And we just never associate with one another. It's just how it is."
The morning bell rang loud and clear, a four-note tune that resonated through the corridor. Jean spared a quick glance to the classroom, features etched with impatience. "Do you get it now? So no matter what you do, try to interact with the popular group as little as possible."
