NOTES: This is my first short story of Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart. I recently started watching the show, and I'm liking what it's got so far. To show my appreciation, I decided to make a short story.

Be advised, this story contains heavy topics: childhood neglect and depression.

Another day of hard work protecting Pure Heart Valley came to an end. Another monster coming to attack the kingdom, but it was swiftly defeated by the sheriff's department. Sounded like a normal, typical day for everyone in Pure Heart Valley.

Well, maybe to the villagers, since their village was saved yet again by their heroes. But it wasn't fully that way to the heroes, or at the very least, Mao Mao. As the three rode the Aero Cycle back to their house, the black cat had a cross look on his face. Badgerclops and Adorabat knew that the black cat wasn't happy, but between the two of them, Adorabat was the one who had a guilty look on her face.

"Mao Mao... I'm sorry..." Adorabat said, almost quietly.

Mao Mao didn't respond. As mad as he was, he didn't want to argue with his little deputy, mainly because he was trying to drive. And he knew better than to lose his temper while behind the wheel.

The three finally arrived back home. Mao Mao parked the Aero Cycle in the garage and the three of them got off.

"Badgerclops, go upstairs. I need to talk to Adorabat, alone," he said.

"Yeah, sure man," said Badgerclops.

The cyborg badger headed upstairs, leaving his friends by themselves. Adorabat watched him leave, then looked up at Mao Mao. The black cat still looked cross, making the little bat nervous.

"One thing, Adorabat. I told you to do one simple thing: stay back. Why didn't you listen to me?" said Mao Mao, trying not to lose his temper.

"I-I just wanted to help!" said Adorabat.

"I know you want to, but when I tell you to do something, you do as I say," said Mao Mao.

"I know, but how can I be a great hero if I don't help fight? And it's not like I don't ever help out!" said Adorabat.

"You always help out, but that monster was spitting acid. It nearly hit you at one point! Do you have any idea how much pain you would've been in if I hadn't pushed you out of the way?! You could've been killed!" Mao Mao said, starting to raise his voice.

"I know it's dangerous! But I can handle myself!" Adorabat said. Now she too was also starting to raise her voice, yelling back at her friend.

"You are still training to become a hero! You have to listen to whatever I tell you! Do you understand?" Mao Mao scolded her.

Adorabat let out a heavy sigh and formed an annoyed look. She rolled her eyes.

"Adorabat, answer me! Do you understand?!" Mao Mao repeated.

"Yes dad," Adorabat said.

The words echoed in his head again as he remembered the last thing his little deputy said. The argument was a couple hours ago, and Mao Mao still hadn't had the courage to talk to Adorabat again. After she called him "dad", he froze in shock.

At least for a moment, because when he finally managed to move again, Mao Mao suddenly ran away from Adorabat. He didn't run far. Just back upstairs, and he made it to the bathroom and locked himself inside.

And ever since then, the black cat had been hiding in there. He sat down on the floor, hugging his legs to his face, and he was breathing heavily as he was trying to hold back from break down into tears. A swarm of emotions was circling in his head, and he couldn't process it all at once. All because of what Adorabat called him.
