F O R T Y - N I N E : E X E C U T I O N
"It's time sister..." I hear Jason speak from the shadows but I ignore him, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of my attention. I'd lost track of how long I'd been sitting here and was nearly falling asleep. I haven't ate since breakfast which was a piece of toast and I can feel myself becoming weak. Plus I'm worried about the baby and not eating enough for them to strive inside me. All I know is it's beginning to get late and the sun is beginning to lower in the sky by the lack of natural lighting in the basement.
"Unhinge her from her shackles. She won't fight you, won't you Katarina?" Jason questions me and I stay silent as someone lifts my arm and removes the steel shackle. They move to the next one and remove it as well. "Stand," Jason orders me and I slowly slide up the brick wall.
Jason grabs a hold of my arm and guides me out of the damp and dark basement. I slowly glance around the interior of the mansion. It's completely decorated with furniture with its redwood floors and stone walls. It reminds me of the interior of a castle with its high vaulted ceilings and medieval chandeliers and wall decor. We walk down a corridor that leads to the outside and when I step outside, I squint my eyes from the sun. It's lowered quite a bit so it's shining directly into my line of sight.
I look around and we are in a grand court filled with rose bushes. Further out there's a bare patch of lawn that has a raised pallet with a tall wooden posted standing directly out of the middle. It looks like it's just been made as a few men stack mounds of hay and dry wood all around it's base. That would be where he plans on burning me alive.
Execution by burning at the stake. Just like our ancestors during the witch trials.
Only thing was humans were actually killing their own kind. Most warlocks had already fled by that time, sadly leaving their dedicated human followers behind. Yes they practiced in witchcraft but they didn't posses magic like we do. A witch is a pretender. That's why it's consider an insult to call a warlock, especially a female warlock, a witch.
"You're not even going to let me say goodbye to my loved ones first?" I finally speak as Jason leads me to the stake.
"You'll be able to soon enough Katarina," he mutters and I look up at him with curiosity.
"What is that suppose to mean?" I ask but am quickly shoved forward before two men pull me onto the raised platform.
My arms are raised together and tightly tied off around the post. I try out the rope and I can't move my arms. There's absolutely no getting out of this.
One of the men picks up a torch and ignites the material at the tip. I watch as it combust into flames and my heart begins to race. Is this really happening? Where the hell is Dante and everyone else? I feel the warmth of my tears roll down my cheek as I lower my head. I silently apologize to my unborn child within me.
"Oh sister, don't fret. Soon you'll find peace," Jason stands before me and tilts my chin up to look him in the eyes. "I will say this is a bit ironic. You are being burned at the stake by fire and your beloved will spend all of eternity burning in Hell as a demon, where he belongs. I suppose you're one in the same," he snickers and rage boils inside.
Before I can stop myself I spit in his face, catching him off guard. He slowly wipes it from his face and glares at me.
"Go to Hell Jason! If anyone deserves to rot in there, it's you. Dante is ten times more the man you'll ever be. All you are is a fucking disappointing coward!" I growl and quickly feel the sting of Jason backhanding me across the face. He hits me so hard that it causes my head to snap to the side and I immediately taste the metallic flavor of blood in my mouth. I turn my face back towards him and spit the blood from my mouth at his face once more. He lets out a frustrated growl and raises his hand once again. I close my eye and wince, preparing for his assault.
