I was in the girl's locker room. In my swimsuit. I had finally met with the swim team. Which basically included Zoe showing me my place with sickly sweet words.
And Vi was right this Zoe girl hates me.
She came up to me in the changing room and said, "hey paint girl."
"It's good you got all that yellow off you. Now it won't look like the coach is accepting floating bananas in the team."
I think everyone was already familiar with this behavior of hers cause some girls just shook their heads but did not say anything.
There were two girls standing at her back. The mean girl cronies.
"You are one to talk blondie. That hair dye makes me wanna puke, but the smell coming off it says someone already did." I said back smirking.
This earned some catcalls from the girls and one actually came and slapped my back in appreciation.
"You listen to me, this is absolutely not over. I will be this year's captain again and you should know new bee this is my team and since you are a part of it you will follow me." that all was said in such a sweet mean voice that it was not threatening at all.
"Yeah sure. Whatever you say blondie," I said fake laughing out loud.
Everyone was laughing and talking after that. Zoe just stomped her foot and gave me the this-is-not-over look and went into one of the stalls.
I had my cap on and my goggles on my head.
I was ready.
Seeing the pool felt good. I analyzed how much time it would take me to cross the pool. I studied it carefully when my attention was captured by the violent shaking of hands from my right side.
I saw Violet waving her hands at me, Diya sitting right next to her and to my surprise, I saw Andrew and Ash right below them on the stands.Ash caught my eye and raised an eyebrow as if complimenting me. I looked down and realized I was in my one-piece swimsuit. And obviously I blushed. Violet was shouting that I could do it but I think she was about to get a good smack on her head by Diya who looked quite annoyed cause Violet had to be shouting right in her ear.
And that's when I realized half the school was in stands. Talking among themselves.
Cool now if I lost Zoe could insult me in front of the whole school. Now, why won't that excite me?Well, the coach blew the whistle and told us that we would be going 5 at a time and then from both the groups the winners will face off.
The groups divided and I got into the second group. Zoe was in the first group. She might be the mean girl but she was the captain for a reason. She was the fastest here. She won the first race.
Now it was second groups turn. We were standing on our marks. I could hear Diya and Violet shouting 'Go Rose' and then the whistle blew and I jumped.
I was in my territory now. I could feel the water around me. My head cleared completely the moment it went underneath. My head followed my arms sideways and I could feel the bliss of inhaling air. And I swam. With as much speed as I could. Going at a phenomenal speed. I had always loved the water. Even in Florida we had won so many relays and swim meets. I just loved the feeling of water lifting me up and supporting me. My father had first thought me how to surf and along the way I learned how to swim. My laps completed and I pulled myself up on my arms.
It would be a face-off between me and Zoe.
Oh, she was shocked. Shocked out of her wits to see that someone actually might give her competition. And now she started glaring daggers at me but she couldn't really do much or say anything in front of the whole school.
We were given half an hour before both me and Zoe went onto the pool again. Vi and D came running towards me.
The first thing I blurted out was, "why are Ash and Andrew here?"
Diya and Vi gave each other a knowing look.
"Oh, Andrew's sister. She is on the team. They are twins, she is in our year."
"oh!" So that's the only reason why they were here. I don't know why but I felt a little disappointed. 'Huh! what were you hoping for?' (my brain not very kindly questioned)
"You are gonna do it!" Vi exclaimed.
"You will be the new captain." she literally jumped and hugged me.
"uh guys I have to beat Zoe for that," I said.
"And we know you can." Diya chipped in
After that coach blew her whistle.
Both Zoe and I were in positions. The coach blew the whistle again and we were off. This time we had to only do two lapses.
***
We were in the parking lot. All of the swim team with us and I even spotted Andrew talking to his sister Lexi and Ash was somewhere in the background.
Zoe was nowhere to be seen. It had been a close call but the coach had declared me winner after almost twenty minutes.
One of Zoe's cronies had left her side the moment she lost position.
She came skipping to my side and hugged me in a congratulation which seemed totally fake. I wasn't too thrilled about this but had to thank her. I did not want to rouse bad blood in the team the moment I entered.
Though Vi pointed out that it was already there before I even got on the team.
She was right with Zoe on the team and she was actually a really good swimmer so she will always be at my throat. It would be really tough to maintain peace.
As she was not the captain anymore, I was.
