"Happy Age of Becoming, my dearest cub,"
Nifa curiously sniffed the tiny box her mother and father presented to her. It was her 5th birthday, otherwise known as her Age of Becoming. She was now eligible to explore the outside world, and all the worlds beyond it. It was quite an important age for a Raionsupiritean, but she wondered what this small gift had to do with it. "What's in here?"
"This is a very special gift, left by an ancient hero from our people," Nifa's father purred from under his slightly graying mane. "You have reached your Age of Becoming, and are now ready to reclaim it."
Nifa cautiously took the box from her mother's hands and peered at it with naive curiosity. She carefully opened it and was delighted to find what was inside.
"It's a Raionsupiritean necklace!" she crooned. "Wow! For me?"
"This is no ordinary pendant," her mother said. "This pendant has a very special power. It will enhance your mind, and allow you to bud and bloom your Raionsupiritean blood."
Nifa's face fell a little when she heard that. She drooped her ears and faced outside the cave, where she watched the other cubs play. All of them looked the same. They all had paws, whiskers, fur on their faces, and even a few had the first tufts of a mane coming in. Not to mention, they all ran about on four legs. She felt out of place with her grubby hands, hairless face, and thought she also bore ears and a tail, they were stubby, not as grown as they should be by this time. And though her instructors had tried to train her into running about on all fours, she was most comfortable walking on her hind legs, like her mother, Sapphira. "So...it's basically a prosthetic to my half-blood abilities?"
Nifa's parents shared a concerned look, but their expressions changed with love for their daughter. "Penzi, let me tell you something," Sapphira said, using the Raionsupiritean word for 'darling.' "What you have, no other Raionsupiritean can possess. You have a very important destiny ahead of you, and how it plays out depends on your decisions, your actions. Those 'half-blood abilities', as you refer to them, are a vital key to that destiny. The pendant has power, but only if you can unlock that power. It will do so for no one else."
Sapphira picked up her cub and nuzzled her face. "You're our race's shining star, penzi. Don't ever forget that."

"Nifa? Nifa, wake up!"
Nifa blinked awake, a little disgruntled by the sudden bright light. Once her vision cleared, she saw Pidge standing over her, looking worried. "There you are! I thought I lost you for a second there."
"Pidge?" Nifa groaned and sat up. "Where are we? What happened?"
"Zarkon's witch, Haggar, messed with our wormhole jump as we were escaping and scattered the team," Pidge explained. "The Green Lion got dumped in this trash nebula, and she's been down for the count ever since."
