II. TWO
THE BONFIRE

"THE BATTLE OF WILLOW CREEK TOOK PLACE RIGHT AT THE END OF THE WAR in our very own Mystic Falls. How many casualties resulted in the battle?" Mr.Tanner questioned the class. The students remained silent, as no one raised their hands, Tanner picks on the first person he lays his eyes on. "Ms.Bennett?" he asks Bonnie as heads turned to look at the Bennett girl.
"Um... A lot," she utters as chuckles erupted within the class. "I'm not sure. But like a whole lot." "Cute becomes dumb in an instant, Ms.Bennett," the history teacher retorts as he turns his gaze towards the town's quarterback. "Mr.Donovan. Would you like to take this opportunity to overcome your embedded jock stereotype?" He questioned. "It's ok, Mr.Tanner, I'm cool with it," the dirty blonde haired teenager rasped out, earning giggles to escape from the two Gilberts.
"Mr.Lockwood," he called out to Oliver as all eyes landed upon him. His eyes were wide as if he had been caught sticking his hand within a cookie jar as he had a highlighter at hand and the cap within his mouth. "I—Well. Twe—Twenty?" Oliver utters. "Twenty," Tanner repeats his answer, causing Oliver to nod his head. "A for effort," Tanner says, patting the Lockwood teen on the back.
"Hmm. Miss.Ava Gilbert. Certainly you could help me apprise the class of the town's war?" Tanner turns towards the youngest Gilbert twin, causing her gaze to look up from her notes as all eyes were on her. "I—Uh, I'm sorry sir. I don't exactly know that," the brunette admits as she lowered her gaze back to the ground. "Hmm. Elena?" He called out. "Surely you can enlighten us about one of the town's significantly historical events?"
"I'm sorry, I—I don't know," Elena admits as well. The class became silent as Tanner's gaze switched between the twins. "I was willing to be lenient last year for obvious reasons, Ava, Elena, but the personal excuses ended with summer break." Both, Ava and Elena's gaze lowered towards their notebooks. "There were 346 casualties, unless you're counting local civilians." A voice spoke up.
"That's correct. Mister..." "Salvatore," Stefan says with a nod as Ava and Elena turn to look at him. "Salvatore. Any relation to the original settlers here at Mystic Falls?" Tanner asked curiously. "Distant," Stefan said with a nod. "Well, very good. Except, of course there were no civilian casualties in this battle," Tanner remarks as he turned around, facing the board.
"Actually, there were 27, sir." Stefan corrected in sober manner. "Confederate soldiers, they fired on the church, believing to be housing weapons. They were wrong. It was a night of great loss. The Founder's archives are, uh, stored in civil hall if you'd like to brush up on your facts. Mr.Tanner." Tanner remained silent, though his pride dripped away like a popsicle on a hot summer day.
