XI. ELEVEN

CAREER NIGHT

⊱ ────── {.⋅ ✯ ⋅.} ────── ⊰

AVA RUSHED around her bedroom. She tripped over her own feet, trying to put on her Converse high tops. The clock read 7:10, class started at 7:30. She was late. Her room still had the faint smell of jasmine from the candle she had lit last night. "Book. Textbook. Pens. Pencils. Notebook..." Ava said out loud, looking through her school bag to see if she had all of her belongings for the day.

"Hey, Ava." Jeremy greeted his older sister, entering the room to see it a mess from Ava's morning rush.

"Morning, Jer," Ava replied. She smiled at her brother as the sight of him holding up his old sketchbook caught her by surprise. "You're drawing again?" She asked. "Uh-yeah. Trying at least." He nodded. "I was thinking. Could you check out my new work? You've told me many times in the past you could help me out." Ava nodded her head. "Of course."

Taking the sketchbook from his hand, Ava placed it on top of her desk to check out when she got home. Elena watched the duo interact from the hallway, smiling before Ava caught up with her. "Jeremy's got his sketch pad out." She said, walking down the staircase with Elena behind.

"You're kidding," Jenna said. The parental figure stood at the bottom of the staircase.

"Nope, but don't say a word. The minute we encourage him, he'll put it away." Ava said. "Psychology major. Check that." Jenna chuckled.

Elena was silent, checking her phone as Ava peered at her. "You and Stefan? Update?" Ava asked. "He knows how I feel and where I stand and I know where he stands but it doesn't matter. He's leaving, moving away." Elena explained. "Where's he going?" Jenna questioned.

"I've stopped asking questions," Elena said opening the front door. "The answers get scary." Elena, Jenna, and Ava exit the Gilbert home to start the day.

"Yours leaves. Mine returns." Jenna commented. "And mine is nonexistent," Ava added, earning a playful nudge from Elena. "Logan?" Ava chuckled. "He's back." Elena and Ava groan. "I didn't let him pass the front door." "I hope you slammed it in his face." Elena sighed.

"Ah, medium slam." "Three-strike rule, Jenna. You're not even allowed to watch the news." Ava pointed out. "Exactly. No more Logan 'Scum' Fell."

"Cheers to that."

Ava leaned against her locker, hot chocolate at hand, watching as Oliver went off about another one of his ancestors' journals. "Well, he was like RAAAH," Oliver explained, his hands expressing surprise. "And woke up like AHHH." He took in a deep breath.
