Asking For Help

By the third day in Hima, Yasu still didn't get anywhere with getting in contact with General Ren or Doctor Shiro. Because security was so tight in Hima, there were no underground organizations that Yasu could hire to send word for him.

The soldiers would never send messages directly to General Ren. It would have to go through several soldiers in charge to ensure that the message was worthy enough to hand over to General Ren. Because General Ren was so busy, most of the work that was deemed unimportant would be handled by his subordinates.

Not only that, Yasu didn't want to expose himself more than was necessary. He was already struggling with hiding his true identity when he came to Hima, but decided to reveal it in the end because the ends justify the means.

If he asked a soldier to send a message to General Ren, they would think that he was trying to climb a higher branch and catch General Ren's attention. He would be quickly dismissed and chased away.

He could not break into the soldiers barracks, nor wait outside of the barracks to catch sight of General Ren or Doctor Shiro. He would be chased away as soon as the soldiers see him.

"Why the long face, little brother?" Konda asked as he sat in front of Yasu. It was right after the lunch rush and the dining room was fairly empty.

Yasu looked over at Konda. Ever since he met Konda on the first day, they have been dining together at least once a day, sometimes twice a day. They got along so well that Konda began calling Yasu 'little brother.'

Yasu debated if he should ask Konda. He didn't make friends with Konda to use him, but now with no way to contact General Ren or Doctor Shiro, Konda was the only one who could help him.

"If it's something that I am able to do, don't hesitate to ask your big brother. As long as it's law abiding, your big brother will try my best to make it happen." Konda said as he saw Yasu hesitate to speak.

Sighing heavily, Yasu decided to ask for help.

"I told you that I came here to meet my friends."

"I remember."

"It's just that... they don't know that I'm here." Yasu confessed. "It's been about five years since the last time we spoke or seen each other and I don't know how to get in contact with them."

"You said that one of your friends is a soldier, correct?"

Yasu nodded his head.

"Well, that's easy, I can help you get in touch with him." Konda said as he smiled.

Yasu looked down at his hands that held the teacup on the table. He bit his lower lip before speaking.

"My other friend also works in the barracks as well, can big brother also contact him too?"

"Of course, it would be an easy job for big brother to let them know that you're here to see them. I think they would be very happy to know that their friend, who they haven't seen in five years, came all the way to Hima to see them again." Konda said. "So tell me, who are these two friends?"

Yasu looked straight into Konda's eyes. His gaze was clear and pure.

"Can you send word to General Ren Fujimo and Doctor Shiro Yada, that their friend Yasu is here to meet them?" Yasu asked.

Hearing the name of his commander and the commander's personal doctor made Konda flinch. Had it been anyone else, he wouldn't hesitate to help his little brother, Yasu.

Not only that, but General Ren and Doctor Shiro hand long become a couple. It was well known within the Hima soldiers, but unknown to the rest of the world. He couldn't risk introducing someone from that past with unknown history to the both of them. If Yasu came between the two of them, they would blame Konda for it, he would be transferred and demoted.

Seeing Konda hesitate, Yasu quickly spoke.

"Please, big brother. I just want to speak with them." Yasu said as he reached out to grab Konda's wrist. "I have no ill intentions towards them. Doctor Shiro apprentice under my Dad and General Ren knew my Father. They both ate and stayed inside my home in the past."

Seeing Konda begin to waver Yasu didn't stop speaking.

"Not only that, I gave them a gift. Maybe you've seen it before? I gave them both a sandalwood silk fan. General Ren's fan has an embroidered crane in a bamboo forest, while Doctor Shiro's fan has two koi fishes swimming in a circle."

Konda's eyes slightly opened wider at Yasu's words. He has seen the wooden silk fans before. When General Ren is going through a hard time and needs to think, he would open his silk fan and stare at it for a long time. As for Doctor Shiro, he would only bring out and open his fan when he was drunk. Doctor Shiro's fan had been damaged, so he treated the silk fan like his precious treasure.

They had thought that General Ren had bought them a matching couple silk fans to celebrate their union. He thought that they were trying to show off their love in front of the soldiers. To hear that his little brother was the one who gave the wooden silk fans to General Ren and Doctor Shiro was unbelievable.

"Show them this when you tell them that I am waiting for them." Yasu desperately said as he pulled out the double sided embroidered handkerchief. "They will believe you and they'll agree to see me. I promise you, I have no ill intentions towards them. Nor have I done anything wrong to them in the past. They'll definitely want to see me. Please big brother, can you help me?"

Seeing his little brother's pure eyes plead for his help he could only sigh heavily and take the handkerchief.

"Give me a day to think about it." Konda said as he tucked the handkerchief in his robe. "If I do help you, don't blame big brother if they don't come see you."

"I understand big brother!" Yasu said as he stood up and made a formal bow to Konda. "I will be leaving in two days, if I don't see them then I won't blame big brother. I also understand that General Ren isn't someone that can easily be pulled away from his work. Nor is he someone that is reckless and will meet me without an investigation. Since everything that I said to you is the truth, he can investigate me before seeing me again. If the three of us meet again, it is thanks to big brother's help."

"Stand up, stand up. Don't bow so respectfully to me, it's drawing attention from everyone." Konda said as he pulled Yasu to sit down. "I still need to decide if I'll pass on your message."

"I understand. Even if you don't pass on my message, I'll try to find another way to contact them." Yasu told him. "No matter how long it takes, I'll try my best to see them once again."

Konda sighed and drank the cold tea in front of him with one gulp. He made a courtesy bow and left the Three Horse Inn.

Now that all of Yasu's cards were on the table, the only thing he could do is wait. Should he leave Hima without seeing General Ren or Doctor Shiro, he'll have to find another way to see them again.
