"You're nothing but a poor thing!"

"You're nothing but a dog!"

"You're trash and ugly looking!"

I couldn't take it anymore. Everyone was just yelling hurtful comments at me, that I was getting so angry. I couldn't let them see me cry so I ran away and made sure to not look back. The only safe place I knew around here was the Curtis's place. I'm sure I'll be safe there.

"Winter?! What's wrong, why are you crying?"

I didn't want them to see me like this either so I ran to Pony's room hoping he wasn't there doing his stupid homework. I shut the door closed and immediately yelled into a pillow.

"Winter? Kid you alright?"

"Just leave me alone!"

-meanwhile in the living room-

"She's not gonna open the door," Pony said.

"Well try harder Pony," Darry said.

"Why me?" He said in response.

"Your her age, you should know how to deal with these girly things," TwoBit said.

Pony shook his head. He didn't want to confess about getting a book thrown at his head, so instead of going back, he sat down till someone else tried.

"Ow! Dammit Winter! I just wanted to talk," said Soda.

Pony quietly chuckled but got a smack in the head in return.

"That sucker got a good aim," Steve hissed rubbing his head.

"I'm not going in," Darry said.

So it all was up to one person. Cold hearted but good looking.

"Dallas! Your turn bud," said Darry as he playfully punched his arm.

"Thats not gonna happen Darry."

Darry frowned.

"And why not?"

"You know we don't get along Dar'."

"Fine then. Guess you don't want fifty bucks."

Dally immediately got up and gave a final glare at Darry.

"If this don't work, I expect my money."

-Back to Winter-

The door opened, and after throwing all of Pony's books to the door, I eventually ran out.

"Hey kid."

It was Dallas. What was he doing here? Darry knows very well I hate him.

"Dally get out," I said wiping my tears away.

"I uh...I came to t-talk with you."

He was like every other Soc. Dallas was cold, and rude. If I had the chance to punch that beautiful face of his, I would.

"To talk? Dally all you do is talk bad 'bout me. Haven't you had enough!?"

Dally cleared his throat and slightly leaned back on the desk across from me.

"Dammit Winter! Darry and the rest of the gang is real worried 'bout you. So if you tell me what's wrong, I'll leave y'alone."

Looking at him in disbelief, I took a deep breath and chose to give in. Despite him always being rude to me, I couldn't stand him being in the same room as me, and I kinda felt bad that I aimed books at the boys heads. But I blame good old Darry for teaching me how to throw a football.

"Some stupid Soc's were yelling dirty things at me so I got real angry."

It's funny now that I'm thinking about it. Some of the things that they said to me, Dallas had mentioned to me too. But the next thing he did, startled me. He sat down beside me and hugged me closer to him. It was comforting in a way.

"Their stupid people Winter. I'm sure their just trying to get through your head."

I couldn't believe what he was saying to me. He cared.

"I mean, I get why their trying but it doesn't matter."

Of course he doesn't do nice. He can't be nice for just a few seconds. He was describing himself in such a way that it angered me

"Your just like them Dal. I don't even know why I told you in the first place."

I tried to push him away but he grabbed my arms and embraced me in a tighter hug.

"Winter I care. I like you and that's why I've been saying these rude things to ya because I couldn't accept that. You were to nice for someone like me."

I pushed him away and looked him right in the eye. He's not pulling that joke one me again. So I laughed and stood up.

"Go to hell Dal."
