While Sam and Colby were in the mall, they hadn't realized it until they had ran smack dab into a girl carrying more bags than she could hold. Sam stumbled back slightly, in shock, he hadn't expected to see a girl but when he saw the girl fall back and spill her drink everywhere; he had immediately bent over to help her pick everything up. He wasn't sure why this girl would have had to bought all of those merchandise because it looked like she didn't need all of it.
"I'm so sorry," says Sam as he helped pick the girl's stuff off the floor.
"No, I'm sorry, I didn't see where I was going and ran into you," Sam smiled as he helped the girl stand. She was covered in sticky drinks and water which wasn't a good combo.
"I'm Sam," he says. "And this is my friend Colby," Sam pointed at Colby who waved nervously at the girl. "What's yours?"
"Um..." says the girl with hesitation. "I'm Kat," she responded.
"Do you need help?"
"No, I think I got it," says Kat. "Thank you,"
"I insist, you look like you could use some help," Sam let out a soft smile as he took the bags from her. "Where's your car?" he asked as they walked onto the parking lot.
"I don't have one," she said softly. Sam looked at her surprised, she looked old enough to have a car, but Sam couldn't understand how she got to the mall without one.
"You mean to tell me that you walked from your house to the mall?" questioned Sam "But you came to shop,"
"They're not for me, they're for my family," she said.
"Well, I'll save you the trouble," says Sam. "Would you like a ride?"
"Are you sure it's not a problem?" asked Kat. Sam nodded his head and guided her to the car. Not a moment too soon, that Sam's friend Colby started jogging over. Sam helped put the bags in the trunk then went around to the driver's seat and climbed in. Colby quickly arrived and got into the passenger's seat. Afterwards, Sam began driving Kat home. As he drove, he looked back at Kat as if he had known her all his life. But they had just met that day. Kat guided Sam to her apartment but told him to stop on a curb.
"Just drop me off here," says Kat as Sam stopped. They were five minutes away from the apartment. Reluctantly, Sam agreed and stopped the car where she wanted to be dropped off at. Getting out, Kat got all the bags and drinks that she had been struggling with and began making her way toward the front door.
"Do you need help?"
"No, thanks, I'm good." Replies Kat as she made her way down the block. He watched her as she entered the apartment. Shrugging his shoulders, he began to drive back to his house with Colby still sitting in the passenger's seat.
"Colby," says Sam. "That girl looks familiar,"
"Why do you say that?"
"I feel like I've seen her in my dreams."
"Maybe it's her?"
"I won't know unless I hang out with her,"
"How do you plan to do that?"
"I don't know,"
"Did she give you her phone number?"
"No,"
"Address?"
"No..."
"Do you even know her name?"
"It's Kat,"
"Don't forget about your girlfriend Sophia, you know that popular girl that you've been spending time with?" responds Colby. "How do you think she'll act if she finds out your falling for this girl?"
Kat had asked Sam to drop her off a few blocks from her apartment. This was so that way her stepfamily didn't think that she had caught a ride from someone. They enjoyed watching her struggle with the bags. Upon entering the apartment, she set the bags on the table and sighed with relief as she got a glass of water. What was strange was that the apartment was completely dark, and she didn't see her stepfamily anywhere. Thinking that she was in the clear, she drank her water and sat at the table – as she laid her head down the lights in the apartment came on causing Kat to groan and block the light from shining in her face. Looking at the entrance she saw her stepmother standing there with her arms crossed and was now making her way toward the kitchen.
"Oh uh... hi Jessica," says Kat. "I didn't see you there,"
"You're late,"
"I bought everything you asked for,"
"Good," she says as she called up the stairs. "Valerie! Alice!"
Oh no, here they come. Kat's step siblings appeared in the kitchen. Valerie and Alice looked at Kat and rolled their eyes. That was until she noticed the stuff that Kat had bought them. Ignoring her, Valerie and Alice ran toward their new clothes and shoes, they shoved her out of the way causing her to collapse on the floor with a groan.
"Katrina," says Jessica. "Since you were late, your punishment is to clean the dishes, cook some food and do the laundry,"
"Oh, I'm fine, thanks for asking,"
"Then you need to clean the bathroom especially the bathtub," says Valerie, joining in.
"And clean my bedroom!" chimed Alice.
"Better get started now Katrina," says Jessica, Kat sighed and stood. This wasn't unusual that they gave her chores. She had already felt like a servant since the day her father passed away. She ran through a list of chores she had to do, there were six.
1. Clean the dishes.
2. Cook the food
3. Do the laundry
4. Clean the bathroom
5. Clean Alice's bedroom
6. Count money
Tying her hair into a tight bun, she began to do the long list of chores; starting with the dishes. Walking over to the sink, she put her cleaning gloves on and began to do the dishes. As she cleaned, Jessica called back one more time.
"Oh, and Kat," says Jessica. "Don't forget, tomorrow your working at the tailoring store all day,"
"Yes Jessica," with that, Kat continued to do her chores leaving the food for last as dinner approached. She started to cook some food such as chicken, rice, etc. After about an hour of cook she had finally finished. She set the table and placed the food on it.
"Dinner's ready!" she says. Just as she did, her stepfamily entered the kitchen. They sat around the table as Kat began to place the food on their plates. After doing theirs, she put some food on her plate and as she was about to sit down, Jessica looked at her.
"What are you doing?"
"Um, sitting down?"
"With us?" responds Jessica. "No, no that just won't do"
"What do you mean?"
"Katrina, why don't you take your food and go to your room?" Kat looked at her stepmother stunned to silence but sighed and picked up her plate and made her way to the basement.
