One Last Chance |6| The Ascension

Prologue

Cumbria, 1207.

McKenzie sighed a long, tired sigh. "My hand hurts," she complained petulantly. "And my back hurts."

Across the room, as she turned the page of her book, Wanda rolled her eyes. "Why don't you try the dancing again?"

"Hey, good idea!" the Doctor exclaimed, looking up from his own book.

"Absolutely not," McKenzie said quickly, straightening.

The Doctor pouted. "Why not?"

She smiled sweetly. "Because, my love, my darling, handsome, light of my life..." She raised her eyebrows pointedly. "That's why my back hurts."

"I only dropped you a couple of times," he pouted defensively.

"A couple dozen," Wanda corrected.

"I said I was sorry," the Doctor pointed out, sliding into the seat next to his wife.

She tilted her head in acknowledgement. "You did."

"And I made it up to you."

This time, her smile was more of a smirk. "Yes, you did." Wanda cleared her throat, and McKenzie jumped. "But I'm bored... And this is getting me nowhere." She gestured to the paper she'd been writing on—or at least attempting to.

The Doctor rubbed her back soothingly. "It'll take time. You'll get better at it, so long as you do what has to be done."

"As I recall, it was doing what had to be done that landed me in this situation," she pointed out.

"Yes, and we're all very, very grateful." He started to kiss her shoulder, moving up towards her neck.

Suddenly, the door burst open, admitting the Abbot and one of his monks. Wanda raised her eyebrows. "Thank God."

The Abbot cleared his throat. "I'm sorry to intrude, but the bells of Saint John are ringing."

McKenzie grinned. "Finally." She disappeared in a blur, and when she returned, she was wearing a cowboy hat with her nun's robes. "We're gonna need some horses."

I can't even begin to explain how excited I am to finally be writing Clara's series. She's always been a favourite of mine, plus she just had some really great episodes. Day of the Doctor, anyone? I can't wait!
