It took Eyo 2 weeks to get to calabar, the day he arrived he called, saying he was on the highway and they had just hijacked a car from some thugs who tried to attack them. They had just passed the now dilapidated Axari Hotel with over grown shrubs, the streets had stains of blood and rotten corpse of animals and bones of humans littered. President Jonathan sent out information to different states asking people from every part of Nigeria to come to Abuja, as there is military presence to protect them. I refused to acknowledge the information knowing that it would be a bloodbath if an attack is launched at Abuja; it would be an annihilation of our species. At about 10:30am we heard a bang on the corrugated sheets covering the windows, some thugs had just moved into the neighbourhood and noticed my house and thought it would be a walk in the park to bully us and take over. Few minutes after their arrival, Eyo and the soldiers drove in, engaging them in a gun battle, they were trapped on both sides and couldn't run.
'Matthew! I can't remember a time we met on peaceful terms, you're always surrounded by a fight.' Eyo shouted waving and grinning
'What can i say, I'm a huge success brother!' I replied
'Get down here Matthew!' He screamed---he is sanguine which made him a loud hombre.
'Uncle Eyo!' Mmaette and Udoette chorused racing towards him.
'My beautiful niece and strong nephew, how are you guys?' He asked wrapping them in a bear hug.
'We're fine, how was your trip?'
'Adventurous I would say. Wow! Mama you're a facsimile of your mother, same goes for you my strong man. Thank God you didn't look like that.' He teased looking at me
'Whatever helps you sleep at night Eyo.' I replied
'I got stuffs for you, I hope you love it. Take the bag and whatever looks like a boys belonging there is for your brother please.'
'Yes uncle, thank you.' Mmaette curtsied
'Thank you uncle Eyo.' Udoette said
'You're welcome big guy.' Eyo replied with a smile.
'It's good to see you brother.' I reached out to shake him with a half-bodied hug.
'Same here.' Eyo responded also greeting Udeme and his wife.
'Where's my sister?' He asked, causing a moment of silence.
'You didn't tell him?' Udeme asked turning to me
'He didn't ask so I didn't want to bother him with the news.' I said
'What news?' He asked stoic
'Edna was reversed.' I answered. Eyo's heart melted, the smile on his face turned sour and the few minutes of laughter turned into a nostalgic episode. We left him alone to mourn, while I went to acquaint myself with new additions offering each a cold beer to ease off.
