It's the first day of the Moon Festival, and Jake, due to Tom's insistence, comes with him to watch a stage play adaptation of Murderland. At night time, however, the happy mood of Moonsbane dies down, when a limping old man comes to Jake's class's booth, asking for some Moon Juice.
To add to what Jake likes to call the "mystery sense," another old man, this time from the demon race of Gondola, tells him he sees the shadow of death before him.
"Oh, God! It's obvious, Jake! Your little wimblewees want to flockwhip hers, you rascal!"
- Laura, to Jake
"What's a jarwick?"
"A nonsense word. Alex's original. They call it jargon. Jarwick jargon. Learned the act of murdering words at the old clockshop by Wallbridge District, and now he murders words quite often. A true felon."
- Lucas and Tom, on Alex's prefence on language
Are these old folks mystery men as well?
