Elijah was alive inside the pendant...only shattered.

The Mikaelson Compound
The air was warm against her skin, which smelled of cucumbers and tears. It was a bit grey, her skin, from the Hollow's perilous deeds and from not feeding on blood afterwards...more specifically the blood of her father, he who gave her life must bring her back to health. Her chest rose and fell with every slow breath, and her blue eyes were closed. Her curly hair laid on her shoulders, against the fabric of her nightgown.
Her nightgown
One hand rested on her abdomen, and another laid at her side, bare of her rings, being held by another. The body and the soul within was tired, worn down by the week's events, hurting. The heart skipped a beat every now and then, also tired, wounded. She needed the rest.
Klaus stayed by his daughter's side through the night. She needed the comfort and company, and she needed it from him. She had cried for quite a bit before she fell asleep, her heart broken. What she had been through was traumatic; nearly dying with her uncle, making peace with it after losing all hope...and then ending her relationship with her husband after he watched with such emptiness as she suffered. He wished he was there for her as she was dying, instead of her husband. It made him furious, but he hid that from his little flower. He would restrain himself from ripping the witch's heart out.
Rebekah had called him late in the night, seeing that Elijah's sires had all passed. He assured her they were going to get Elijah out of the broken pendant, they were going to get him back. He explained to her in detail what had happened, and she relayed the information to their brother Kol. They were heading to New Orleans at the given moment.
Klaus opened up his phone, which had buzzed, with his free hand then turned the brightness down so he didn't wake his daughter. He had gotten a text from Caroline, which made him smile for a small smile. He still adored the blonde completely, his heart still longed for hers.
Poppy hasn't been answering her phone? Is everything okay?
He let out a soft sigh and typed his reply.
It was a traumatic day yesterday, she's resting, but she'll be okay.
What happened?
She almost died, Elijah too. She's also considering a divorce.
He tucked his phone back into his pocket and laid his head down beside his daughter's closing his eyes. He wanted to rest, but he couldn't...no, he wouldn't. Not until they saved Elijah, who's soul was broken into pieces with the pendant. He wanted to be there when his daughter woke up, so she wasn't alone. He didn't want to fail her again.
