They kept me at the hospital for a week just to make sure I was fully clear of any internal injuries. It was a week after the accident. And that night I couldn’t sleep. I was still trying to figure out what exactly happened. All I remember is being with Seth, (and still no one would tell me where he was and if he was ok) the fireworks and the necklace he gave me that was now sitting on the table next to my bed. I tried to reach for it but I couldn’t reach, I forgot I had a broken arm. I sat back and sighed, my mind flicked back to Seth and where he could be and how he was.
Tears came back to my eyes for the 25th time in the past 10 hours, I couldn’t help myself, I lost it. The nurse came running to my side, “are you ok? What’s wrong?” she asked trying to calm me down, “where is Seth! I want to see him!” the nurse looked at me and sighed, “I guess I could take you to see him.” She pulled the blankets off me and helped me up; I looked at the chain “can you put that necklace on me please?’ I asked trying to grab it. She grabbed my arm to stop me and grabbed it for me and clipped it around my neck.
She walked me out of my room and down a long corridor. It was all just a plane white color with only a few pictures hung up. We came to a large door that had to be unlocked by the nurses’ card and a code. She unlocked the door and let me enter first; there was another corridor with 10 or so doors. She waked me forward to door number 4 and opened it for me, pausing before we entered she told me to take it slow. I stepped in through the door frame and into the semi dark room. It was a dull room with nothing much in it, a cupboard, a few side tables, some doctors’ equipment and a bed. I could hear the beep of the heart rate monitor, it was a steady pace. I took a step back and froze, I had a flash back to when we were on the top of the Ferris wheel and I could hear his steady endless heartbeat. The nurse tapped me on the shoulder “are you ok?” she asked slightly turning me to look at her “yeah I’m ok just… thinking.”
I took a few more steps forward, I could see him… laying there motionless. The tears started up again,
is he dead? is he alive? Is he awake? Is he asleep?
That’s all I could think of as I slowly made my way closer. Placed my left hand on his hand to see if he would react but he didn’t. His hand was cold. I sat on the chair just behind me as the nurse pushed it under me. “I’ll leave you alone for a while” she said closing the door behind her.
I looked at his face, he had a tube going into his mouth. My eyes went blurry from tears. I stood up and laid my head on his chest, I heard his heartbeat again and had the same flash back. He was still alive.
