Chapter 5

Jasper's POV

Greetings,  I am Jasper Andrew Whitlock, a name that has graced my existence for the past half-century or so. However, in recent times, I have come to be known as Jasper Andrew Hale, the twin sibling of the illustrious Rosalie Lillian Hale. Furthermore, I am honored to be considered the adopted brother of both Emmett Dale Cullen and Edward Anthony Cullen. My heart belongs to the remarkable Mary Alice Brandon Cullen, who I proudly call my wife. Additionally, I am privileged to be the nephew and adopted son of the esteemed Carlisle and Esme Cullen. It is with great pleasure that I embark upon recounting my tale, commencing from its very inception.

The date of my birth is etched in the annals of history as December 26, 1844. It was on this momentous day that I, Jasper Andrew Whitlock, first drew breath into this world. My parents, Cornelius Thomas Whitlock and Cora Elizabeth Walton Whitlock, resided on a modest farm nestled within the picturesque landscapes of Houston, Texas. In the years preceding my arrival, my older brother, Abraham Cornelius Whitlock, had already graced our family with his presence. Our father, a man of means, possessed a few individuals who were bound to him by the chains of slavery, as was the custom during that era. It is worth noting that I was born into a time when the abhorrent practice of slavery was still deemed lawful.

Allow me to delve into the memories of my childhood, where the names of our enslaved companions resided within the recesses of my mind. Maya, Thomas, Zachariah, and Rose were the individuals who toiled under my father's ownership. However, it is important to emphasize that my parents, in the presence of us children, treated these individuals with a modicum of respect and dignity, rather than as mere chattel. Amongst these individuals, there was one who held a special place in my heart - William, the son of Maya. He and I forged a bond that transcended the boundaries of societal norms, becoming the closest of friend

In the year 1849, when I was a mere five years old, a momentous event occurred in my family. My beloved sister, Lillian "Lily" Belle Whitlock, came into this world. However, her arrival was not without its challenges. Lily, unfortunately, fell ill during the initial weeks of her life. I can still vividly recall the sound of my mother's anguished cries, as she feared for Lily's very survival. It was a distressing time for all of us. Yet, against all odds, Lily managed to overcome her illness and emerge triumphant.

Fast forward to the year 1861, when I had reached the tender age of seventeen. By this time, my older brother, Abraham, had already answered the call of duty and joined the ranks of soldiers fighting in the Civil War. Tragically, news reached us that he had been presumed dead, having fallen in action just a week prior to my seventeenth birthday. The weight of this loss bore heavily upon my young shoulders.

Driven by a fervent desire to honor my fallen brother and contribute to the cause, I resolved to enlist in the war effort. However, a significant obstacle stood in my path. The minimum age requirement for joining the military as a soldier was eighteen, and I was still a year shy of that milestone. Undeterred by this setback, I resorted to a little white lie. With a charismatic demeanor that seemed to come naturally to me in those days, I confidently declared myself to be eighteen years of age. This fabrication allowed me to proceed with my enlistment.
