A pinch, that's all it'll be. I've done this every morning for as long as I can remember. This life is all I have to remember. I try and imagine what life was like before the war, before all humanity was sterile, but I can't. This place, a Hospital, conducts tests on us. They begin with a sample of blood every morning.

Dr. Hayden excuses Jillian from his office and calls me in. He seats me across from his chair and grabs a clipboard with a paper attached. I catch a glimpse of the words 'patient zero'.

"How is your sleep schedule?" He asks. Dr. Hayden is a heavier-set man with a stubble for a beard. Not to mention his glasses, big round glasses that are always sitting on the end of his long and crooked nose.

"Better... The sleeping meds seem to help." I lie. In reality I haven't been taking my meds. Only the anti-radiation ones essential for survival.

"That's good to hear, now this will only pinch." He holds the needle in his hand and presses it to inner crease of my arm, I hardly feel a pinch anymore. It's like I've grown a tolerance to the pain. Somehow I find a sense of freedom in the blood as it escapes my veins.

I long to know that feeling.

Freedom.. I have never understood that word. You are never really free are you? There are always rules, guidelines, laws. As a child I would picture being rescued from this... Prison, by my knight in shining armor. Little did I know, I should fear him the most. He gives me hope, something I have since lost.

There are almost 30 patients. Though I try to keep mostly to myself, I do have 4 close friends, they are: John, Thomas, Adalie, and Jillian, they were conceived prior to the entire human population becoming sterile, 17 years ago. I was born, a year after they were, my birth gave people hope to have kids again. My mother died in childbirth. Now I belong to a secret group of people called Peace Makers. No one knows how I was born. Only that I am the last hope for humanity.

My name is Chloe Kay.

I am patient zero.

This is my story.

Thoughts from the author:

Hey!!! I am super excited to finally be publishing the first chapter of this book! It has been in the making for awhile. In case anyone doesn't know what sterility is, it is not being able to conceive a child, so if the whole world becomes sterile, that could possibly be a problem. . . . .

I am going to be updating daily, so stay tuned!!! I do have a few chapters pre-written, because I am a sophomore in high school and I am a very busy girl. (Understatement of the year.. xD)

If you could let me know your thoughts so far (I know it's not much yet) but anything would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!!! Much love - Samantha
