Angst prompt #1: "Were you ever going to tell me?" with Prinxiety and the most heartbreaking thing I've read from CoffeeFlavoredTears. A few little things got changed around, but mostly stuck with the prompt. This is going to end in tears, let's do this, my dudes.

Virgil Strome was upset and angry at himself. He had been reassured that it wasn't really his fault and this happened sometimes. But he was still upset. He deserved better. Roman deserved more than Virgil could give him. It was a simple fact but one that still hurt: Virgil was no longer in love with Roman. That wasn't to say he didn't like Roman. He was a genuinely nice guy, sweet and caring. But Virgil didn't feel that spark he used to. They had been dating for years but this slow withering had been going on for a few months.
To realize he didn't love Roman was an ugly truth he had to deal with. He had never wanted to hurt him but pulling away from him slowly wasn't going to work. He knew it was wrong to lead him on like this. He had to end it now.
Roman Sanders was absolutely besotted with Virgil. It was almost three years to the day that they had started dating. Three years to the day that Roman felt he found his soulmate. Virgil was slower and more hesitant. But Roman didn't care that he didn't want to move in or always spend the night.
Roman has been planning it for months. Tonight was the night. He bought the ring, made the reservation at Virgil's favorite restaurant and waited. He was going to propose to the man that made life worth living.
Virgil opened the front door quietly that evening. Roman had asked him to come over and they were going to go out for dinner. Which was fine, a normal thing to do with your boyfriend. But Virgil had a long day and he needed a break for just a moment. Roman had reassured him that they weren't going anywhere fancy but still. His plan to catch his breath failed very quickly when he spotted Roman sitting on the couch, tying his shoes. He wasn't dressed very fancily, but he still looked very nice.
"Hello, darling." Roman got up and brushed his lips against Virgil's cheek. "You look lovely."
Virgil ran his fingers over his hair with a grimace. "Came straight from work, didn't really have time to get ready."
"No worries! We're going to that Italian place you like, with all the fairy lights?" Roman smiled and Virgil returned it. That was another thing; Roman always remembered places, things, and feelings Virgil loved. That's why it hurt all the more. There was no reason he shouldn't be head over heels for him. It wasn't like there was anyone else he was thinking about. It just wasn't Roman. And it would never be Roman. "I figured you would have had a long day and you would want somewhere a little down-to-earth." There was no end to this kindness that Virgil could never reciprocate.
"Thanks, Princey." Virgil took his hand and let himself be led out to the car. The drive was fairly silent except for Princey's soft music and his own humming. Virgil's heart was slowly breaking into pieces. Perhaps it had been breaking all along. Every soft memory, Virgil snapped a piece of his heart off and thrown it into the wind. He had hoped Roman would be there to catch the pieces. And he tried and tried. But he missed every time. It wasn't Roman's fault. Maybe Virgil never should have started to throw the pieces.
