These voted for brown coal
now have bushfires in their spring
summer promises -
not some sweet, trifling thing.
We're running out of time
and consequence is sharp
both for wry wise and idiots,
gawping like carp.
And still Chinese coal mines
come on stream,
blotting all offsets,
choking the dream.
Another year has marched
to ember in the dust;
it makes no economic sense
but the deniers must
still trek us into floods,
droughts, fires, hurricanes,
ice-storms and sea-surges
for the deserts in their brains.
