News of Jake and I dating spread quick. Apparently our hours in the band room had not gone unnoticed, and people had started taking bets. Quite a lot of bets apparently.I rolled my eyes as I saw people handing each other money as I walked towards the dance room. I thought, going to the town yesterday that I missed my audition. Luckily though, Mrs. Roberts had sent out a message at the beginning of the day saying they would be moved to Sunday afternoon, so I was safe.
I strode into the room, realizing that no one was here yet. I got my phone and music set up for my try out, then started streching. I wasn't nervous, I had done this routine a thousand times. The only thing I was worried about was my ankle but I knew that I should be okay, since I had started wearing an ankle brace while dancing.
Just then Mrs. Roberts rushed in, looking a bit frazzled. I jumped up off the group to grab a few bags that were weighing down her arms. She gave me a quick smile and then unlocked her office, motioning for me to follow her in. "What's all this?" I asked, indicating the bags. After setting them all underneath her desk she smiled "They're for the preformance. Costumes, a little bit glitter, and a small surprise for the winner of the solo dance."
She winked at me, before saying "Oh look at us wasting time! We need to let you do your routine, so we don't have to worrry about anyone running late." I giggled than strode back into the main dance area. I had put the radio so Mrs. Roberts could sit and hit play, pause, and such. She got comfortable in her seat then started the music while I counted myself off in my head "A five, six, seven, eight.." I quickly burst into my routine as music seeped out of the speaker and floated through out the room.
I finished the dance in the splits, which I quickly bounced back up from, to face a smiling Mrs. Roberts. She paused the music before it could replay the song and stood up. She came over to me and stood there, with a grin plastered to her face. "You cannot tell anyone this till I announce it on Thursday, but unless anything better than that shows up in this room this afternoon, you've got the solo." I squealed, which I so barely often do, and jump hugged her.
She hugged me back for a moment, and then released me. "Now shoo! I have other dancers and dances to watch." I picked up all my stuff and hurried out the door. Luckily the next dancer wasn't in the hallway, so no one heard what Mrs. Roberts had told me. I rushed down to the band room, where I knew everyone had planned on meeting.
Just before I reached the hallway, I ran into Aleesha. "Leesh!" I gasped. "You scared me Wish! Damn, I haven't screamed that loud for a long time!" she chuckled. I smiled sheepishly "Sorry, just in a good mood. Where are you off to?"
"Mr. Huffton's room. He says I have some really good potential with my writing and wants to work and talk to me about it for a bit." she explained. I grinned, hugging her "That's great! Well, I'm off. Gonna go meet up with Jake in the band room." Leesh threw her head back with a loud laugh. "Of course. I'll see you in English tomorrow!"
After waving good bye, I sprinted down the hall, where I heard a guitar being strummed, and came in to find our whole group sitting in there. I grinned and went over to place myself next to Jake. He stopped strumming long enough to kiss my cheek and give me a side hug. When he went back to strumming, Taylor asked me "How'd the audition go?" I gave her a smile "Amazing."

The week sped all the way to Thursday. After school, I ran to the dance room, to be the first one in there again. After everyone shuffled into the room, I was shaking with anticipation. I had a feeling I got the solo, but then again, everyone in the room had been accepted because of a talent, most of them for dancing. I could have easily been beaten. Just as long as Miranda hadn't won. No one wanted that, not even her sister that was a senior.
When Mrs. Roberts finally appeared she had a dress bag with her, obviously holding our outfit for the Christmas preformance. We all squealed. "Girls! Silence." she barked at us. "Before I announce the winner of the solo dance, I decided that I would show everyone what the uniform was that we ordered this year." She hung up the bag, and started to slowly unzip it. When she finally let go of the zipper, everyone was lost for words.
It was beautiful. A red sequined top that had loose fabric that would catch the light whenever it was shifted, throwing patterns of red spots onto the hardwood floor. The bottoms would obviously work well and shift and flex with you. There was a large, red and black bow to place somewhere in our hair. "Well?" Mrs. Roberts said with a smirk on her face.
The comments poured out of our mouths. "Perfect!" "Totes adorbs Mrs. R!" "Can I go try it on?" "I can't wait for the preformance!" "I love it!" She smiled at us and our reaction before turning serious again. "Ladies! Attention! Now, to announce the winner of the solo dance." Every head turned to stare at her, the ones who had tryed out, including myself, even leaned forward, waiting for her to countinue.
"The winner.. Of the solo dance.. For the Christmas concert... Is..." she said slowly. My heart was beating faster than a proffesional drum could ever pound. I had my fingers crossed, a lot could change in a few days. "Wish- Melissa Parker." she finished her eyes finding mine, a smile glinting on her face.
"Of course." everyone heard Miranda over the applause and cheers. I couldn't stand it anymore. I stood up, turning to face her and glare. "What is your problem? This is one dance. So what that I got it. It doesn't mean that you need to be a complete bitch like you have the last few years. I don't get it. We used to be completely fine. All just because of some things in the past, extra dances, and me reaching out to befriend other people, caused anger from you to me. Which, if you ask me, is completely ridiculous. You need to build a bridge and get over it. No one likes your negativity, you bring down the team. I swear, if you keep doing this, we can do the exact same thing to you like we all did to Elizabeth Shaw.I know you don't want that, so don't make it happen."
With that, I sat back down, everyone lost in the memory of Elizabeth Shaw. She had been a complete and total bitch to everyone on the team and everyone tried to ignore her. It really didn't work. So, like it had been stated in the rules, we could set up a sheet and anyone who signed it, agreed that the said person was to leave the dance team. We did this to Elizabeth, she had been worse to Miranda.
Miranda, who of course was sneering at me. "You think you're so much better than all of us, all because you got the solo dance. Guess what Melissa, you're going to regret saying all that. Trust me." With that, she got up and stalked out of the room.
I sat there, staring at the place she had recently vacated.
