I walked into History the next day, ego swelled and confidence raidiating off of me. This was my new beginning. I strolled to my seat, winking at the boy that sat in front of me. He was cute. Just in that shy sort of way. Dark shaggy hair, obviously the type that was usually adorned with a beanie, and hipster glasses.
Leaning towards him to start a conversation, I peeked out of the corner of my eye. I saw Jake and Miranda staring, but I just smirked and leaned a bit farther. "Hey, what're you reading?" I peeked at the cover of his book. "Oh.. Uhm, the Percy Jackson series... Again" He shot a small smile my way.
"Oh, my gosh! That's an amazing series. I never got to read the second series he wrote about Half-Blood Camp."
He chuckled "Well, I would've never pegged you as a fan of those stories. I'm Hunter, by the way." I smiled "Nice to meet you Hunter, I'm Wish. Oh and trust me, I could go on forever about the different books I've read." Just then our teacher came in, calling for silence.
I slowly ripped out a piece of paper from my note book and scribbled
"Here's my number
Maybe we can talk about books sometime :)

I walked into my dorm, drained. I had never thought that looking like you were not bothered by your ex and enemy being together and flirting with other guys would take so much out of someone. I sighed checking my phone whilst flopping on my bed.
Hunter: Heyyy, so about talking about books. We can go into town this weekend & ik this cafe/bookshop. Wanna go?
To Hunter: Sounds awesome! Sure thing haha :)
I layed back, wondering how I had chosen Hunter out of all the people. He was cute, just not for me. I knew of someone who was, but I was not going to say something like that over text. It would be better in person. Maybe I could even get her to come with me.
I smiled to myself, before starting homework as soon as Nikki and Taylor came in. They stopped in the doorway, staring at me. I looked up, meeting their eyes "Something the matter?" I questioned, their gaze unwavering.
Nikki shrugged "We are so used to you going to practice dancing on Mondays, we weren't expecting you here." I laughed, a loud, full laugh that I always did. "Sorry, I had a ton of homework and I actually wanted to finish it. When I am done though, I am going to go dance. Got to work on my solo!"
They nodded then walked over to their beds, dumping school supplies on and soong getting to work. It did not take as long as I thought it would to finish my work, so I quickly went and slipped on yoga pants and a loose t shirt. Waving goodbye, I strolled out of the room, walking down the hallways to the dance room, avoiding the band room yet again.
Getting there, I turned on the song that was made for our recital. "A five, six, seven, eight" I breathed, then launched into the whole dance. The dance came easily to me, not needing much thought as to what step was next. I had always been able to dance. It was the one thing that had been a staple in my life, keeping me planted, and solid.
I practiced for hours.
I never really could get enough dancing, it just was as some would say, my natural high. I had gone through the routine a thousand times, at least. I checked the clock, realizing I had already missed dinner and needed to head back before I would be locked in this wing of the school for the night.
I quickly sprinted out of the room, after packing up. The time was cutting close to 8:30, when they locked all the doors and everyone was either to be in the commons, the Hall, or our dorms. I was zero for three of those places.
I moved quickly, running around corners and taking shortcuts, not even realizing I had taken the route to the band room, until it was too late. I heard the music, but could not slow my pace, so I ran into the band room. Literally, full force, straight into the band room.
To find Jake.
Alone.
Awesome.
I tried to make my way out of there quick, but Jake, realizing it was me, got up and stood in front of the door. "I saw you go down to dance. I have been waiting for you for a while." He said, leaning against the pole in the center.
I shifted my weight to my other foot, worried about time "Well, I obviously have not been waiting for you, so if I could go to my dorm now." I tried to take a step around him, towards the door, towards the hall, towards my room, but Jake just moved any way I did, blocking access.
"What do you want?" I asked, starting to get annoyed. He looked geniuely surprised by this, even though I did not believe it "Why are you so mad at me?" Those seven words came out of his mouth, and I was the one who could not believe it.
I blinked a few times before answering. "Excuse me? Why am I mad at you? Well, let's see. To start off, the dance. Everything was fine. We were having fun. I come back from the bathroom and you're making out with none other than Miranda in the middle of the dance floor! When you were my date, my boyfriend, and the same one who had dissed her a few weeks before! So please, tell me, why would I not be mad at you?"
Jake stood there, mouth opening and closing as if he was trying to say something. "Wish, I..I can explain." he tried. "Save it. Unless you have an absolutely valid and believable story, I do not care. Now if you excuse me, I am going to my room. Goodbye Jake. Oh and.. It's Melissa to you." With that, I stalked around him and out of the room, holding back the tears.
Just a few more steps, then you can let go.
That's all I could think.
That thought repeating a million times over.
I got to the dorm, silent tear tracks lining my face. I just screwed everything up with Jake. He was trying to explain. I should have let him. I just, I can't though. He ruined it. He kissed Miranda, it's his fault. I took a hot shower, letting it burn my skin, giving me something else to think about other than the sad look in his eyes, the way his shoulders slumped, and how he seemed defeated.
I had won.
Winning, obviously, was not everything.
