"Why are we here, Ronnie?" I asked gripping Betty's hand. She squeezed mine back. Veronica swept a finger through her long dark locks. "As you know, someone tried to assassinate dad." I nodded. "But why are we running? Dad threw his hands in the air. "Finally! Mi hijo is saying something useful, mija." Betty crossed the room to sit next to Veronica. "Now, now. What about the kids? According to the news, they're targeting the entire Parker-Lodge family. What good are we to the kids, dead?"
Hermione sighed. "Thank you." The room grew silent. Suddenly, Betty gasped and tears filled her eyes. She looked at me. "Peter, Peter. What if it was my dad?" All eyes were on her. I shook my head. "We put him in jail Betts."
She put her face in her hands. She turned to every person in the room, locking eyes with everyone. "Why would your father hate all of us?" Dad asked. She put her head down. "He was the Black Hood." Everyone gasped. "When Peter and I were 17, we put him in prison. Not before we fought him, though. Maybe he heard I had kids and, and...." Veronica hugged her. "It wasn't your dad, Betty."
Betts grabbed her knees. A tear spilled from her right eye. "Veronica--"
"Your father is dead."
Silence.
I grimaced.
"What?" Betty exclaimed, grabbing the couch to support her from falling. "Peter and I went to see him at prison. He'd been sending the kids letters. He must've found out somehow that they were born. Peter found all of the letters before Azelia, Gray, or London received one. Matthew wasn't born yet. " Betty glared at me. "What? What happened to him?"
"Someone leaked he was the Black Hood. One of his um," I clear my throat, "victims family members was in the same jail and well..." my voice trailed off. Betty grew an ugly shade of purple. Grieving tears trailed down her face. She freaked out.
