“You always come here.”

“It is not a crime to reflect on things that were.”

“No, but you should not continue to torture yourself.”

He turned those sad, silver eyes to his best friend, unsurprised by the bright pink looking back at him. “The pain never ends, no matter where I am. He never leaves me, never lets me forget.”

He turned back to the distorted veil, the only thing separating him from the man he loved and would always love. “At least here I feel close to him. Here it is easier to recall the memories.”

The girl looked at the veil then back at her friend. “I am never falling in love if it ends like this.”

He shot her a look. “It may not seem it, but it is worth it. He was worth it, even now that I am all but broken, knowing that he is still there on the other side, able to be happy, able to love again… somehow that makes it easier and also completely unbearable.

“So go through it.” She nudged at the emerald sand with her toes as she moved to stand in front of him. “I know that it is dangerous, even more so for you, but maybe you can just see him every now and then. You took his memories so there is no chance he would remember you even if he does see you.”

“Oryn, you do not understand. I cannot. Not only because it would be reckless and still incredibly dangerous, but...”   He trailed off for a moment, closing his eyes and recalling a memory of those blue eyes and those large hands that loved to hold his own…  and that smile... “I am not sure if I laid eyes on him once more that I could ever conjure the strength to leave him again.”

As his own tears began to fall, the sky suddenly filled with water sprites as they took flight, drops of the eastern ocean they’d been swimming in falling from their bodies to rain down in a mixture of magic, water and light. Every night, without fail. The constant, the routine helped to keep him from bursting into nothing more than a cloud of colorful energy and being absorbed by the core of magic that ran through everything. He always felt balanced on the edge of destruction, but coming here, watching his world move forward, watching the veil and reminding himself that the owner of his heart was still out there and he wasn’t going through this pain that constantly reminded him of all that he’d lost, it all worked together to keep him going. It kept him strong for the people he’d pledged his life to, the people he’d sworn to protect, the people for whom he’d sacrificed his heart to keep safe.

“All of this magic and power and still we cannot mend a broken heart.”

“It is not broken, it is where it belongs, with him. I am the one that is broken, that is empty.”

Oryn shook the rain from her lavender hair, and turned back towards the path. “Come. Your father is asking for you."

He gave a short nod, reaching his fingers out to touch the edge of the veil. “I love you, Scott.” He let his fingers linger for a moment more before he finally turned and followed his friend back into the forest.
