Under the twinkling dome and among the dampening sand stood Jack over Roger in one of the better shelters.
Jack prodded Roger awake with a blackened foot, "Hey, where's Ralph?"
Roger, irritated and groggy, said, "He might have buzzed off with Simon and Piggy."
Jack's lip curled involuntarily. He made his way over to the second shelter closer to the platform. Jack stumbled over an old stick hidden in the darkness and cursed.
He peeped inside. Ralph lay somewhat in the middle with Simon tightly curled by Ralph's stomach. Simon looked slightly like the alley cats at home. Scruffed up and dirty. Jack looked a little closer and saw Ralph holding something that looked like a black cap. Upon closer inspection, Jack realized saw the golden badge that belonged to him.
Piggy was lying in the corner of the shelter. At first glance, he looked like an actual pig. His specs sat next to his head. Jack had the strong urge to break the other lense but controlled himself.
Jack crawled in and repeatedly slapped Ralph's calf to wake him up.
"Ralph," he hissed, "wake up."
Ralph stirred and looked at Jack with drooping eyelids. He noticed the sleeping Simon next to him and stroked his arm gently.
"What do you want?" Ralph whispered.
"Come and take the fire shift with me."
"No, Samneric is already doing that. I'm sleeping."
"Just come with me."
"No, you're going to wake everyone up."
"If you don't come with me, then it's going to be you that's waking everyone up."
Jack couldn't quite make out Ralph's facial expression, but he was sure that it was contorted in a mixture of confusion, amusement, and slight fear.
"Fine," Ralph muttered.
Jack and Ralph walked side by side together to Fire Mountain. Jack attempted to take Ralph's hand, but he slapped it away.
"You don't deserve any of my attention after what you did today."
Jack smiled, "I beg to differ."
If it weren't for the current situation, Ralph's tone would've sounded playful, but instead, it seemed cold, "Then beg."
An uncomfortable silence fell between the two boys. Jack glanced at Ralph with a slightly worried look, like a child who just pissed off their mother. Ralph took no notice.
The orange light of the fire came into view, and so did two silhouettes. Ralph climbed up the mountain first to talk to Samneric.
"Jack and I will take your shift."
The twins looked at each other uneasily, sharing the memory of the argument earlier.
They nodded like a single person, "Okay."
Jack and Ralph were alone once again. Ralph sat next to the fire and stared at the embers. The light exaggerated his best features making Ralph look as extraordinary as ever. The way that his blond hair reflected the yellow light and his green eyes contrasting with the red made Jack feel a certain way that's quite indescribable.
On the other hand, Ralph looked over at Jack, catching him staring. His red locks blended with the fire, and his freckles popped out more than in the day. To Ralph, Jack looked quite cute. For only a moment, though, when he remembered the fire. Ralph focused back on the sparks.
"What are you looking at?" Ralph asked.
"You."
Ralph rolled his eyes, "Quite being soppy, I'm still pissed about the fire."
Jack scooted closer to him, "Why can't we just stay here? Together."
"We can be together at home."
"Not! Don't you know how everyone feels about queers at home?"
"Of course I do. We're friends, Jack. We're not queer, and because of you, we're not going home."
Jack slapped the dirt, "Why can't you understand that some of us don't want to go home?"
Ralph lifted an eyebrow and looked at Jack, "Why would you say that?"
Jack realized he'd said too much. He looked away as he turned red, "It's nothing. I just want to be with you."
Jack closed in on Ralph and attempted to kiss his neck. Ralph pushed him away,
"No, tell me. If you bottle things in, you're just going to hurt yourself."
Jack wrinkled his nose, "Fine, I don't want my dad to hit me anymore."
Even in the dim lighting, Jack saw Ralph's skin go pale, "What? Why? Where's your mum?"
Jack rubbed the back of his neck, "My mum left us and replaced me with my half-sister. My dad is always drunk. I'm surprised he still has his job as a CEO, though."
Ralph responded with a sympathetic hum, "Daddy is in the navy, and Mummy is dead. I do have an older sister, but I don't think she cares for me much," Ralph half smiled, "I'm usually alone, but that's okay. If we go home, we'll be together."
The boys looked at each other, pretending for a moment that they were back in England, but they could be themselves and love who they want. Ralph leaned into Jack's shoulder. Jack put his arm over Ralph, hoping that he could protect him from the burden of living. Jack bit the shell of Ralph's ear and licked it, giving him a Wet Willy of the decade.
Ralph screamed, "Stop! Gah!"
Jack rolled on top of Ralph and let all his weight keep Ralph on the ground. Ralph squirmed under Jack's body until he got an idea. Ralph simply got up. Jack fell onto the rocks and grunted.
"You're lighter than I expected," sneered Ralph.
Jack rubbed his head, "Shut up."
Jack sat down criss-cross by the fire again. Ralph promptly sat in Jack's lap and curled up. Jack cradled him like a baby.
"Am I forgiven?" Jack teased.
Ralph closed his eyes and shuffled, "not really."
Jack leaned down and kissed him, "How about now?"
Ralph looked back at him, "Perhaps."
Jack smiled, "You are a dastardly man."
"No, you."
Jack stroked Ralph's head, "I love you."
Ralph wrinkled his nose and jeered, "Thanks."
