I sat there, quietly, lost in thoughts. Had I really sealed away my memories? Why would I do such a thing? I was curious, I wanted to know why and how powerful I could be ... but the very same thought, the thought of knowing who or what I truly was, it terrified me. "Isn't there another way? Won't I be able to discover my powers without remembering my past?" I admit it, I'm a coward and I would prefer the easier way rather than the hard and dangerous one. Julia frowned at me as if she couldn't quite comprehend my words. "Well, it is possible, but you won't be able to trigger them by your own will or they will easily spin out of control. I know you can teleport yourself, make telepathic links and have certain visions about the future ... maybe even the past". Julia had such a presence, and yet she seemed so far away when I looked into her eyes. Almost as something burdened her, but I shouldn't be the one to draw conclusions like that ... What did I know about others feelings? All my life (well ... at least of what I remembered) I had isolated myself, Nick was the only one I didn't push away ... No, it was better to bring the focus back to our conversation. "How'd you know that's some of my powers?" Did she just guess? Had she spied on me? Could she read thoughts or something? No, it had to be something simpler, something I didn't think about. "The night you dreamt of me, I was there, you pulled me into your dream. You called out for me, yelled my name, that's why I went to the meadow but nobody was there. So I turned back, but then I heard a scream, your scream, and then ... well, then I saved you. It's getting late, I'll show you to your room".
"I hope its okay, I'm sorry for the little space". The room was indeed small, but I liked it. "So ... is there no shower here?" My bathroom had a sink and a toilet ... but no shower or bathtub. "Right, we clean ourselves in the river. Most of us are up and going at 05.30 because of jobs and personal reasons". I just nodded and smiled, but on the inside, I died a little. How was I supposed to get up at such hours when I never ever got up before 08.30?! "So ... what kinds of jobs do people have?" I didn't know much about this community, but they didn't seem to depend on technology like modern society. "Lumberjacks, fishers, hunters, we live off what Mother Nature offers and we do not take more than we need ... sorry, I'll answer more of your questions tomorrow". She walked towards the door but hesitated before going out. "Julie ... there is only one thing I ask of you. Never go out of your room before 05.00, no matter what you hear or see do not leave the room. Can you promise me that?" She had this strange look in her eyes, I felt something deep inside me ... a strange fear ... an ancient fear. "Yeah ... yeah, I promise I won't leave my room". She didn't seem entirely convinced, but she did seem a little relieved. "Good, sleep well and I'll see you early in the morning". With that said she walked out without looking back. Such a strange rule ... wonder why they have it ... but no matter, my limbs felt heavy. I had never been as tired as I was now. I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow ...
I was back in the damned dream, back on the meadow, running around and playing ... but I ... it couldn't be me, right? It was a tiny girl, maybe 7 years old, she had the same green eyes and brown hair like me. She was playing together with another girl, a girl with familiar green eyes and jet black hair. If this was me, then I had no recollection of it ... but maybe this was the future ... I had no clue. As I continued to observe them I started to notice the absence of an adult. Weren't their parents around?
Suddenly I was torn away from the girls, I saw them from a birds perspective by now. Nothing special was happening, but something was amiss. I could feel it ... and then out of nowhere a dark silhouette appeared at the outskirts of the woods, my blood froze and the temperature around me dropped considerably. It wasn't familiar, but ... at the same time, it was ... my instincts told me to get away from it.
Suddenly I was seeing everything from the little brown-haired girls perspective. The black-haired girl looked straight at me, her eyes changing right before my eyes, the fiery orange around her pupil was turning blood red, it continued to overtake her eyes until the eyes were completely red. Her shape was changing as well, growing taller and taller, fire began to burst from her mouth and then she exploded, turning into the creature I saw at the outskirts. Its ribs were sticking out, its arms were long and the claws were grotesquely drenched in blood. It didn't seem to have legs, in fact it seemed like ... a shadow, a very lethal shadow. It grabbed me by my throat and my scream was cut short by the claws ripping at my throat, it burned my throat as if someone held a torch against it. I was fading out of consciousness, but I could clearly hear its last words, the hiss powerful and ancient: "Welcome home, I have been waiting for you!"
