Chapter 17

I was still angry, but the alcohol that was still in my system kept it at bay. We were on the road again with Nate driving in his car, Ricky driving mine, Link and Phil driving theirs, in search of a new hideout. A new home, and new friends. Then it dawned on me. I shot up and quickly fumbled for my phone.

"What's wrong babe?" he asked me.

"I need to let Charlotte know." I said as I dialed her number.

"Heya honey! Are you guys alright? I heard a lot of ruckus coming from your area and then I saw smoke." she said.

Bless this girl.

"Char, I need you to listen to me." I said. "If anyone asks about any of us, you don't know who we are."

"What happened? Are you alright?" she asked panicked.

"We're fine. We just had some run ins with bad people." I said sadly. "I want to make sure you're safe."

"Are you.. coming back?" she asked hesitantly, hints of sadness in her voice.

I sighed. "Not for a while honey. But I promise I will always keep an eye on you all and I will try my best to keep in touch. We'll have to lay low for a while but I will come back to visit."

I heard her crying on the other end and it broke my heart. "Please don't cry Char. I don't want to do this, but it's for you and our family in Stone Ridge's safety that we leave for a while." I said, tears streaming down my face as well. "The last thing I ever want for you is to get hurt again."

"I know darling. You've been a great friend to me and brought this town some light. I'll miss you and you better come back or text or call... or somethin!" she said.

"Char, you're my best friend. I've never had friends as true and caring as you." I said. "Remember, you're a strong woman like me and never let any man tell you otherwise."

"Thank you darlin." she said sniffling. We both laughed at our little show of emotions.

"I gotta go now honey. Please pass the word along to everyone else. Make sure they know not to tell anyone about us or even say they know us. Let the whole town pretend we weren't even there."

"I will dear. You take care of yourself ok?" she said.

"I will. I'll miss you." I said as I hung up.

Nate rubbed my leg as I sobbed.

"Krissy, I want to tell you how sorry I am for bringing you into this type of life." he said. "I wish we had met earlier on before all this shit went down, even before I met my wife."

I held his hand in mine. I chuckled at the thought. "You'd end up being a pedophile if you met me before your wife." I said. "And don't be sorry about anything babe. If you hadn't spilled coffee on me that day, I wouldn't have experience all that I have. I wouldn't have found who I was truly meant to be, I wouldn't have met you and the guys or Charlotte."

He took my hand to his lips and kissed it.

"Never, ever be sorry for taking me. I know who I am now, and it's an amazing feeling." I said.

"Even if it's a criminal or killer?" he asked hesitantly.

"Yes, even if it's a criminal or a killer." I said. "Think of me as Robin Hood." I smiled.

"A very dark Robin Hood..." he chuckled.

I turned my body to face him full on. "I also wanted to apologize to you." I said.

"For what babe? You have nothing to apologize for." he said.

"I do. I want to apologize if I scare you when I go into one of my states. I want to apologize I hadn't done something sooner to stop Kowalski from raping me in front of you...." I said, tears welling up in my eyes.

"Baby, none of those are your fault so you are not to apologize for any of that nonsense." he said.

I still hated myself.

"Listen.." he said smiling at me. "I love you for who you are and what you're becoming. Nothing in this entire world could make my feelings for you go away."

Nate's phone rang in the middle of his speech.

"What?!" he snapped, answering the car phone.

"We gotta pull over and talk." Ricky said. "I've already told Phil and Link and we're pulling up to the next gas stop."

"Fine." Nate said as he hung up abruptly.

"As I was saying sweetheart, no matter what you become, just as long you love me, I'm yours forever." he said.

We pulled over at the next gas station and gathered together.

"So, from my findings, Kowalski found our exactly location by an anonymous tip. Debbie and Earl were the first bread crumb but someone gave out our exact location." Ricky said, vigorously typing on his laptop.

"By who?!" Phil said.

"Anonymous, Philip. Meaning I don't know who did it." Ricky said rolling his eyes

Phil grunted angrily. "Aren't you Mr. Big Shot Hacker who's supposed to know things like this?!" he shouted.

"Phil, calm down!" I said. "He's trying his best."

Phil, frowned at me and started pacing back and fourth angrily. But he didn't bother Ricky as he investigated more.

"I seriously can't find anything!" Ricky said slamming his laptop closed. "The only thing we can do now is separate and go into hiding again till things cool down and I figure things out. If we stay together as a group, the target on us will be visible."

"Ricky, I'm not leaving her alone!" Nate shouted, motioning to me. "I will not let anything like what happened with Kowalski happen to her again."

"You need to Nate." Ricky insisted. "Krissy has less of a target with how new she is in this game. You boys worked for Harper so he know every little facet. If you stay with Krissy, he'll use her to his advantage, especially since you two have a tight bond."

"Fuck!" Nate mumbled, kicking the dirt.

"Krissy, you grab your car and we all split right now." Ricky said.

"I don't know where to go." I said. The feeling of being lost slowly crept up within me and panic started to set in. Nate gently grabbed my face in his hands and looked deep in my eyes.

"Baby, I don't want to put you in harms way. I will not ever fucking let any danger come to you." he said. "But we gotta do what Ricky says."

Tears fell from my cheeks as he kissed my forehead. "I will keep an eye on you, but I need to keep a distance." he said. "Go find a small town or city far far away from here, find a place to stay and try to live a normal life. I will come back to you, I promise."

"I'll get you some fake ID's and you should try to change your appearance." Ricky said. "You'll need to start an entirely new life."

"I can't believe this is happening." I said softly. I didn't want to part from any of them for an unknown amount of time, especially Nate. He, of course, would be staying with his wife. That in itself pained my heart to know he'll be with her and I'd have to be alone.

"Baby look at me." Nate said staring deep into my eyes. "Everything's going to be fine. I will make sure you don't do without."

I nodded hesitantly and gave him the biggest hug I've ever given before.

We all separated in all different directions, not knowing what the future held for us.
