"Here we are you two I made you some cocoa" Mum says bringing us some cups to my room "Now are you all settled Phoebe love" she asks her "Yeah I'm fine thanks Mrs Flanagan" Phoebe answers so shy so sweet I still can't quite belive she's here but when I see the bruise on her cheek and eye i'm filled with a fighting rage It hadnt really occured to me just how much I loved her and wanted to protect her until I saw her Dad hit her, I wanted to kill him for hurting her, it had been two years since I had been honest and opened up about how I felt about her and back then knowing she felt the same was just amazing there had always been this closeness between us ever since we were kids but I had always admired her from a distance thinking that she wouldn't be interested in some rough and ready mechanic like me but she did cor blimey she did when I think back to that day and the look in her eyes when I told her just how much she meant to me...........................

"Well now Phoebe love twenty one today hey" My Dad says to her "And you are still as beautiful now as the day you were born" Her Mum says to her "Oh Mum stop it" Phoebe says "Phoeb's I've got something for you" I tell her "What is it Jimmy" She asks "Come outside and I'll show you" I say to her pulling her through the pub and out of the door "Jimmy what's going on" she asks "I didnt want your Dad to see what I got ya" he says "But why" she asks "Becasue he would get the wrong idea" I tell her and I pull a little velvet box out of my pocket "Happy birthday Phoeb's" I say as I hand it to her I watch her eyes shine when she opens it "Oh Jimmy it's beautiful" she says as she looks at the broach I bought her made of gold and pearls shaped like roses surrounded by pretty little leaves "Help me put it on" she says "But what if your Dad sees" I ask "Let him see it's the best present I've ever had I want to show it to everyone thank you Jimmy" she says as she steps up on her tip toes planting a gentle kiss on my cheek christ it's like and eletric shock runs through me "My pleasure sweetie" I say to her if only she knew how much.

"Come on lets go back in" she says "The music is starting will you dance with me Jimmy" she asks oh will I "I'd love to" I tell her Phoebe's Mum somehow managed to get the local band to come and play at the pub apparently she's only twenty one once. I take her to the floor and hold her in my arms holding her this close is heaven but I still hadnt come up with the courage to tell her. "You look beautiful today Phoebe" I say to her and she smiles at me "Do I Jimmy" she asks how could she not know, we dance together for ages Phoeb's is having such a lovely time. "Phoebe are you going to cut your cake love" her Mum asks her "Yeah ok Mum" she says "come on Jimmy come and see" she says, she's like a little girl "well get on with it Phoebe there's people want serving" her Dad shouts he's such a miserable old sod always has been the pub meaning more to him than Phoebe and her mum. If she were mine I'd make her the centre of my world. I watch her little giggling face as she blows out her candles and cuts her cake god she's so beautiful.

"Hey what's this" her Dad says pointing at her broach "Jimmy gave it me" she says nervously "take it off" he snaps "No" she says as he glares at her "I said take it off flaunting yourself with your fancy dress and now this" I could hit him as her mum comes up "leave the girl alone you're spoiling her party" she says "I don't care letting the lads round here thinking she's fair game" he says Christ almighty "well no lads gonna want me as long as your around are they" she sobs at him running off grabbing her hat and coat "Phoebs wait" I call to her but she's half way down the street "PHOEBE" I shout as I chase her "leave me alone Jimmy please" she sobs "no I won't" I tell her grabbing her by the arms "oh sweetie don't cry please here" as I pull my Hankie out of my pocket "he always spoils everything for me" she sobs "but I'm not taking my broach off Jimmy I'm not" she says shaking her head so insistent I stroke her face pulling her to sit on the steps of the town hall that's how far she ran to "Phoebs can I ask you something" I say to her and she nods "what you said to ya dad did you mean it" I ask "about no lad wanting ya cause of him" and she nods again "cause it ain't true gel" she looks at me "your the prettiest girl around here Phoebs" I tell her "all the lads like ya" I say "no they don't" she says "yeah they do but one likes you more than any of them" I'm trembling inside now "who" she says don't blow it now Jimmy just tell her I take her hand and smile at her "Me" and she just looks at me "I always have I'd do anything for ya girl" I tell her "Jimmy I........" she starts "now what would make my day is if you said you felt the same Phoebs because I know deep down you do" I say and she smiles "I thought you were just being nice like you always did Jimmy" she says "I do it cause I love ya" I say and she gasps giving me the signal that she feels this too "do you love me Phoebs" I ask and she just does that nodding thing again "I think so I don't know what it's supposed to feel like" she says and I smile "shall I tell ya how I feel when I see your face" I ask she wants to hear "I get this feeling in here" I say putting my fingers to her tummy causing her to shiver "and my heart beats like the brass band drum" I say and she laughs "and I feel like a little boy again" I tell her "is that how you feel Phoebs" I ask "yes, yes it is" she says and we both laugh "let me be your lad Phoebs" I ask her she smiles but then is filled with worry "but what about Dad" she says "he doesn't need to know, no one does" I say "just you and me yeah" and her smile returns "yeah alright" she says "I'm gonna spoil ya, treat you so nice I swear" I say she giggles that sweet giggle that makes her nose curl "I love you Jimmy" she says oh be still my beating heart did she really just say that. I snuggle up her as it's starting to get dark "Can I kiss ya Phoebs" I ask gently "I've never kissed a lad before" she says "let me show ya" I say as I lean into her placing my lips to hers they are so soft like silk. I pull my arms around her to bring her close to me lingering the sweet kiss. As I pull away I see my little sweetie is flushed her cheeks warm "Happy Birthday my Darling Phoebe" I say to her as I take her in my arms once more...........

Present Day

"I uh I need to get undressed Jimmy" she says going all shy again "it's OK Phoebs I'll see to the fire so will have my back to you yeah" I tell her "Alright" she says I feed the little fire opposite my bed but I spot her reflection in the brass of the coal bucket as she takes off her clothes my breath quickens at the sight of her her sweet breasts her gorgeous curves Jesus Jimmy calm down "Just get Into bed when you're done Phoebs yeah" I say to her I hear her shifting the bed clothes and just wait "OK all done" she says as I turn round and see her lying all cuddled up in my bed "you all comfy" I ask her as she gives that little nod yet again I suddenly get nervous at the thought of undressing in front of her but if we are going to be married it would be something we would both have to get used to. I go to stretch out next to her when suddenly I jump "shit" I shout "what's the matter" she says "the bloody hot water bottle" I shout and Phoebe is suddenly having a fit of the giggles "it's not funny" I say to her "sorry" she says covering her mouth with her hand but I can see in her eyes she's still laughing. I move the hot water bottle and get back into bed where Phoebe is still having her funny five minutes. she suddenly goes quiet as I lay down next to her "you ok Phoebs" I ask her "yeah it's just a bit weird" she says "look if you're not ready I can sleep on the floor" I say to her "no Jimmy no don't leave me you're all I've got now" she panics " I'm not going anywhere I swear come here sweetie" I say to her opening my arms to her as she comes to me, I wrap myself around her keeping her close "you're so pretty Phoebs do you know that" I tell her as I stroke her hair "do I look nice in my nightie Jimmy" she asks "you look beautiful" I tell her.
