[Sabo x Reader : I Hate You. And By That, I Mean I Love You.]
{Female Reader}
_______
You woke up in a heated state, shaking. You were supposed to hate him. Strike that, you did hate him. Your dreams---nightmares, really---were just a fluke. You didn't want to rub your thumb over his scar while your faces were only a few centimetres apart, and you definitely didn't want to push forwards just a little to press your lips into his. Because why would you want that? You hated him. It was just how it went; it was how it always was and always would be. And you wanted it to stay that way.
It was better that way, plain and simple.
You thought you knew that well enough, so you didn't think those nightmares would continue. But they did. And the irritation you usually felt when you saw his stupid face was almost attraction. It got to such a ridiculous degree that you had to make it a point to go out of your way and ignore and avoid Sabo to try to get rid of the feelings.
Which, admittedly, didn't go quite how you wanted it to.
You woke up early again, deciding to wander out to the kitchen. There was a giant community one, which was the most practical, of course, but it also made midnight snacks pretty awkward if you ran into someone else. Especially for you, since it was Sabo. Knowing you wouldn't be able to go back to bed, you decided to stay up to work, closing the door on his face as he followed you back to your room.
You let yourself fall onto your chair and start working, satisfied with the quiet. At least before soft footsteps approached, followed by soft clicking of a lock being picked.
"Sabo," you huffed. "Please, get out."
"I'm not doing anything," he excused, sitting on your bed and watching you work.
You sighed, tipping back in your chair to close the door and dismissing his presence as you returned to your work. It stayed quiet for a moment.
"(Y/N). (Y/N). (Y/N)---"
"What?" you snapped, pinching the bridge of your nose. "What. Do you want. Now?"
Sabo smiled nervously. "I mean, I guess it's not super important?"
"Then stop bugging me!"
You tried to block out his presence as much as you could, but you couldn't focus on your work with him looking over your shoulder.
"I don't mean to bother, but can we talk? You only just started, so you're not too into it yet?"
"I'm perfectly into it and focused, now let me finish it up."
"Okay," he said, putting his hands up in surrender as he backed off, leaning against a wall near you.
"And by that, I mean get out!"
"It doesn't matter that I'm here!"
"Yes it does!"
"You can do your work perfectly fine with me here---"
"Fine, what do you want? I'll finish this up later."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to catch you in a bad mood," he started, and you just sighed.
Because it wasn't really a bad day, you just couldn't deal with your feelings, so you snapped. Admittedly, you felt bad about it, but you didn't say anything against it, letting him continue.
"You've been ignoring me a lot, whether intentional or not. I was just wondering if I did something wrong?"
You could practically feel your heart clench at that. "I, no, you didn't do anything. I just..." don't want to be around you? That's way too harsh...
You'd hoped he'd say something to interrupt you, but he just stared with big, worried blue eyes.
"I don't know, okay? Just leave me alone, you gain nothing by talking with me."
You averted your eyes back to your work. From your peripheral vision, you noticed a pout on his face as he finally settled on, "I gain happiness." A small grin forming on his face, like he was really proud of how clever he was for that, and that was the moment you were pretty sure you were in love.
You flushed, and hoped he couldn't tell. "All I do is insult you, what're you talking about?"
He hummed. "I can tell you don't really mean it, don't worry."
How did he know? Before you, too. You put your head on your desk and sighed.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm fine. I'm sorry for ignoring you, I just... I dunno, I just have a lot of stuff going through my head."
"I'm here to listen, if you're willing to talk."
You weren't. Not really. You were pretty sure that if he knew how selfish you were and of your emotional stupidity, he'd probably stop talking with you altogether. But you were tempted. Really really tempted.
"I'm not gonna judge you, promise."
And that was pretty much all it took for you to give in. And true to his word, he just listened to you hugging you and reassuring you, because he loved you too.
