_______
Everything hurt. But not too bad. It was the dull type of hurt where you felt sore from a hard day's work, and it was more of a slight annoyance than anything. At least, it felt like it. You couldn't move. Whether it was from whatever made you hurt in the first place or it was a separate thing didn't really matter to you. You just wanted to get up. And maybe breathe normally. It was so hard to breathe, and it was so hot.
You lay in a springy bed for what seemed like days, weeks even, simply trying to move, or at least open your eyes. While you were lying half asleep and feeling half dead, you could hear shifting beside you every once in a while. It was pretty much the only thing thing convincing you that you weren't dead, even if you did feel halfway to hell.
You heard the shuffling again when you opened your eyes, a seemingly simple task once you finally managed it. It was bright, but not exactly blinding. You tried to sit up, but you hardly moved at all. It was apparently enough to alert the nurse beside you that you were awake.
She rushed to an odd looking Sound Dial, speaking in murmurs you couldn't make out. You were able to turn your head enough to look at the woman. She was tall, and her clean, white uniform was like a doctor's coat with light blue trimming that went to her calves, but it looked too loose on her, like the biggest size was too short and too wide at the same time.
But what really caught your attention was her lack of wings. Where the feathery things should've protruded from her back, it was smooth.
When she finished on the Sound Dial, she took a deep breath and returned her focus to you.
"Can you hear me properly?" she asked softly. You tried to speak, but you could hardly open your mouth, and definitely not will your voice to work.
She put her hand in yours. "Can you squeeze my hand?"
You willed yourself to do so, despite your expecting of a searing pain. It didn't really hurt, you just felt so weak.
"Wonderful. Alright, a few more questions. Do you know who you are? One squeeze for yes, two for no."
You squeezed once.
"Great. And, do you know where you are?"
Twice.
"Do you know where you come from?"
Once.
She scribbled some things down on a piece of paper.
"On a scale of one to five, how much pain are you in? One being little, five being unbearable."
Thrice.
"She's awake?" another voice asked.
"She is, doctor. Would you like me to leave?"
"Sure."
The nurse scurried out as the doctor fixed his collar and pulled a seat up, sitting next to your bed.
"Allow me to be blunt. We're not quite sure how you got here, and we're not quite sure what you are. Had you fallen in nearly any other island, you might've been sold off to slavers."
