LIZZIE'S POV
Lizzie brushed her hand over the cave wall, the illusion shielding the tunnel to her current home vanishing as she did so. She didn't glance back at Aphmau as she set off, although the sound of footsteps told her that the girl was following.
They emerged a few moments later into a classically mystical room. The floor was fresh green grass instead of rock, the walls were covered in flowering vines, and in the centre of the cavern lay a willow tree with shimmering light green leaves.
"Wow." Aphmau breathed.
"Wow indeed."
"Where do we start? What do we do?" Aphmau asked eagerly.
"Since you asked, I guess we'll start with Alina. She'll be the easiest."
"As happy as I am to hear that, what about Travis?"
Lizzie's fingers rested on the trunk of the tree, and she traced the patterns of the bark with her eyes for a moment before responding.
"Some... behind the scenes work needs to be done before we can do anything."
"I guess you know what needs to be done then? Lucinda gave me a list, if you need that."
"Believe it or not, I do know what I'm doing."
"Stupid question."
"Hmm."
"What needs to be done for Alina? What are we even doing? I mean, are we..."
"Bringing her back from the dead? No, not really. We're bringing back her ghost as a physical apparition. You'll be able to touch her, but she won't be human. She won't age. She won't get sick. It won't last forever mind you, we have limited power. Even Irene herself, who used the last of her power to bring Lilith and Alina back as people couldn't make it permanent. And if you tell anyone I said this, I will deny it, but my sister was more powerful than me. A lot of her power may have come from a relic, but it still counts."
Aphmau nodded somberly.
"What do we need to do? And why is Alina the easiest?"
"You ask a lot of questions, don't you?"
"I'm trying not to dive in completely blind."
"Wise. In order to do the spell, aside from general components which I already have on hand, as well as the spell, which I also have on hand, for each person we need two things, and I use that term loosely, that represent them, or are a part of them in order to bind it all together."
"And she's the easiest because...?" Aphmau encouraged her.
"Because we already have one."
"We do?"
"Yes. You."
"Ahh. Please tell me you aren't going to kill me. I don't want Aaron to be right."
Lizzie raised an eyebrow.
"Rude."
"That didn't answer the question."
"I'm not going to kill you. Your blood is all that's needed. As her mother, you share her blood. You are a part of her. Sure, we could find something else, but that's just extra work."
"I'll do it."
"That was never a question."
"Good to know. What about the other 'thing'?"
"It would be a personal belonging. That tends to be easiest, aside from the blood of a relative. Something she might have been buried with, or-"
"Please don't tell me we have to go grave robbing." Aphmau interrupted her.
Lizzie rolled her eyes.
"No. There was a tomb, a collection of personal effects from all the lords and ladies of the Phoenix Alliance to serve as a time capsule to remind their people of their alliance, and their unity. She would have something there, if it still remains."
"Okay, brilliant. Where is it?"
"Phoenix Alliance Island."
"Starlight." Aphmau muttered.
"If that's what you want to call it. It was where Alina was born and grew up. It was her home."
"Was it important?"
"Back then? Yes. O'khasis viewed it as a serious threat, but was always cautious to make a move against them. There were attacks by demons, all sorts of monsters. It took in refugees. It was viewed as a pillar of hope. Now it's nothing but a theme park."
"How was it destroyed?"
"When the canon was there. A lot of the island is submerged now, but the crater was caused by the canon when Shad was using it. That wasn't easy for them to bounce back from."
"They managed it though."
"They did. They had great leadership."
The pair fell silent for a few minutes, Lizzie staying close to the willow tree, and Aphmau studying the cavern.
"We should go." Lizzie announced, breaking the silence.
"How are we going to get there? By plane?" Aphmau inquired curiously, asking yet another quest.
"Watch and learn sister. Planes are for the weak."
