I stood still and didn't know what to do. I was shaking from fear and my body got icy. It was either from the cold air or from the guilt of the man we just killed. "I didn't mean it, I swear! Please!" Ander started to cry and Veera covered her mouth with her hand in shock. She just stared at the dead man.
He was bleeding a lot and would later stain the deck if we didn't do something. "We have to get rid of the body." Veera looked at me like I was stupid. "Are you crazy! Someone could have seen us. We can't touch him. We need to get away from him." She walked back and started to take quick and loud breaths. She placed her hand on her chest. "Veera, what the hell is wrong?" Ander looked at me. "What the hell is happening to her!" I grabbed her shoulder. "Veera, are you okay? What's happening!" Talk to us!" She fell to the ground and closed her eyes.
Her breathing got slower and steadier. She opened her eyes slowly and looked up at the sky. "He was my mom's ex-boyfriend." Ander choked on his spit and ran his hands through his hair. "How is that possible! What.. why... Why is he here?" She got up, but stayed seated in the deck, legs crossed. I went and sat next to her. She didn't take her eyes off the sky. "What I'm about to tell you, is something I haven't told anyone before. Not even my mother." Ander looked at me and shook his head.
He sat down next to Veera and placed his chin on his knees."When my mother introduced us to each other, I had a bad feeling about him. He would smile at me, but in a dark way. He would always wink at me and blow me kisses. One night after I showered, he... he..." She started to cry and I placed my arm around her. "Hey, it's okay. You don't have to continue." Ander looked at her and had pity for her in his facial expressions. "I know rape can be a bad thing..." and before he could continue Veera stopped him. "Rape? I never said he raped me." I closed my eyes and slapped my face out of stupidity. "I'm sorry, I thought that..." She took his hand and placed it into hers.
"It's okay. What I was about to say is that the night after I showered, he came into my room while my mom was asleep. He would tell me stories about his family and where they came from. But that night, it was a different type of story. He told me how he would 'catch' girls and drug them. After that he took them to this abandoned house on a farm and kill them. One by one. He said that he would check up on me, see if I was messing around with the wrong people." Ander jumped up by the assumption and looked at the dead man. "Holy shit! The man here was a psycho." Veera got up and helped me get on my feet too. "Veera, I'm so sorry you had to hear that and live with this disgusting, filthy piece of trash. He's the reason that women don't feel safe anymore."
Veera walked to him and grabbed his arm. She pulled him towards the water but after she pulled a few meters, she looked at us. "Aren't you going to help me?" We both rushed towards her and grabbed him together. We threw him into the water and kept staring. He... he was still floating. "Shit." Ander found a brick and threw him with it. I pushed him and he almost fell. "What the hell! You can't just think that by throwing the man with a brick is going to sink him. You have to tie it onto his feet." He found another one and said that it was the last one that he could find. He also found chains. Where he got that, no one but him would know.
We stood on the deck for a few seconds and looked at each other. "Well who's going in?" Veera looked at us and rolled her eyes. She started to take her shoes off, but then I stopped her. "I'll go." I took the chains and left the brick. The chains were heavy enough to let the dead man sink. I took my shirt off and removed my shoes from my feet. I sat down at the edge of the deck and let my toes begin with the process. It was freezing, but I didn't show any of it on my face. I slowly got in and when my whole body met with the water, I started to shiver.
I took the chains from the deck and slowly swam towards the body who was almost 2 meters away. I looked at him for a few seconds and took a deep breath. "I hope you rot in hell." I tied the chains together to his feet and pushed him down into the water. He started to sink slowly. When his head was gone, I went bank and got out of the water, shivering from the icy water. Veera quickly helped me out and Ander wrapped my body with his jacket. Ander looked at me and Veera and asked something that I didn't have the answer to. "Now what?"
The Next Morning I woke up feeling warmer than I was last night. I stared at the ceiling and couldn't stop thinking about what happened. The cabin door swung open and one of the councilors came in. "Rise and shine! Breakfasts in 10." He left and closed the door behind him. I got out of bed and grabbed my toiletries. I got myself ready for a day that I no longer felt the same. And I couldn't let go of the feeling that I would never be the same again. I know I didn't kill that man, but I was there and I got rid of the body. I got rid of the body...I stopped in the middle of the path, headed to the bathroom. "SHIT!"
My prints were on that mans body and if someone found him and called the police, they'd run DNA tests and my DNA would be on him and..."Hey, you okay there?" Ander asked me. "Okay? How could I be okay? How could you be okay? You killed someone and your here asking me if I'M okay!" He took a step closer to me and pointed his finger in my face. "You better shut up before someone hears you. I never said that I was okay! I couldn't sleep last night. After we left the deck, I was up till 3 this morning, crying! So don't go there or else you'll..." A loud siren interups him and we both look the direction the siren is coming from.
We rushed towards the flagpole and everyone was gathered around the head councilor, standing on top of a chair. "Hello, my dearest campers. I hope you all had a great night sleep. But I'm here because I have to announce something." My eyes quickly tracked Veera, but she was still looking at the councilor. My heartbeat started to rise. "Last night one of our councilors found something in the lake." Everyone stared to murmur underneath the councilor. "Silence!" She took a deep breath. "There was a body found inside the lake, floating with chains on his feet. And for that reason we think he was murdered."
Shit. Shit. Shit.
"And for that we have to cancel camp and send you all home tomorrow." Ander looked at Veera and she looked at me. She shook her head in fear and I started to panic. Everyone left and went back to their cabins, scared. I looked up to the councilor and she looked at me. Weirdly. "Noah, Veera, Ander can I see you for a minute? Please follow me." O MY SHIT. We're about to get caught. I know it. I can't believe we were that stupid. We followed her to the middle of the woods in silence and without any eye contact. She stopped and slowly turned her head. "I know what you did, and you better hope you don't get caught."
