I don't agree that Lui should be dubbed this term. It exaggerates his motives and character a lot, which is not very. It's kinda like saying Theodore is a saint for being kind to Shu, and wanting to help him get stronger.
Like, I'm not joking. Lui's motives DON'T even make him a villain. Though, it is true he is the antagonist, as he serves as a roadblock and rival to Shu and Valt. He is NOT a villain. His motives don't involve going on a great scale or taking over the world. It is true that he harmed Shu and almost harmed Valt, but let's take a look at his motives: He is just your average everyday "I wanna remain the champion" type of dude. Look at the real villains, Phi and Theodore. Theodore potentially killed and harmed so many children, manipulated Shu and ended up getting him possessed. Also, leading to a the scary thought of what he planned to do with Shu after the tournament ordeal. As for Phi, he literally seeks his sight on more than winning. He's crazy powerful and psychotic, and has a darker motive that makes him a villain.
Face it, Lui is just dedicated to be remaining at the top. He just wanna stay the best, and not take over the world or anything.
It makes me slightly annoyed when people refer to him as a villain. But no, he's softer than one.
