Wow, I owe everyone a huge apology. I am so, so sorry that I haven't updated in eight months, but I've just had a crazy year that I would rather not go into detail about. Anyways, who's ready to get back to the story?

Kayla's POV

"Um.... Hi there" I squeaked with fear over taking my voice, "I don't believe we've met".

"No, I don't think we have. You're about to get a nice introduction to us though" smirked the shorter one as he began to crash my personal space bubble at a fierce rate.

"Back off!" I yelled and searched frantically for something to defend myself with. I spotted a stick the length of my arm nearby and swiftly picked it up. The second boy cackled.

"What're ya gonna do with that, girly?" He chided as he pulled a large knife from his belt. This is it? My life is going to end in some stupid woods? I don't think so. I thrust the stick I was holding into the face of the shorter boy, causing him to stumble backwards and reveal a gap between them. I threw it at the other boy and darted between them, running as fast as my legs would carry me back to the center of the Glade.

Newt's POV

"Are you sure you haven't seen her?" I asked yet another Glader, to which he responded with a shake of his head and the sound of his foot steps as he walked away. I figured that Kayla just needed to get away from us boys this morning, and after running into the Deadheads decided to hang out there until breakfast. But then she didn't show up to breakfast, and I needed to head into the Maze, but not before I found my girl. I was beginning to get worried. Minho had said that after chasing her into the forest, he gave up because the trees were so thick and he was "too lazy" to run across uneven ground. He'd already left for the day, and he had to keep the other Runners in check, as he was the Keeper. I scanned the edge of the woods one more time and was about to head in when the pounding of footsteps became more and more noticeable. It was as if they were headed towards me. WHOOSH. All of a sudden, a blur of heavy breathing and long hair sped by me. I turned on my heel and- huh? The blur was Kayla, but why was she sprinting out of the forest? Confused, I ran after the teen.

"Kayla!" I called out through my labored breaths. She spun quickly and looked at me with wide eyes, before turning and running again, all the way to the Homestead. I sighed, and followed her inside, taking the stairs three at a time. I burst into our bedroom, and found her sitting on the bed with her head on her knees. I slowly sat down on the edge of the bed next to her and placed my hand on her knee. She flinched away, and brought her head up to look at me.

"What's wrong?" I questioned softly. Kayla looked into my eyes, then laid her head back down.

"Nothing" she mumbled into her legs.

"Don't give me that, you just disappeared into the Deadheads for over an hour, missed breakfast, and while I'm looking for you, you just come running out like something was chasing you. Don't tell me that nothing's wrong" I forcefully inquired. She grunted and stood, walking over to the small window and looking out with a glazed look in her eyes.

"I'm telling you. I'm perfectly okay, alright? If there was something wrong, I would tell you. Now you should be running, so go!" she finished with a smile. I didn't believe her, but I needed to go and she didn't look like she was hurt.

"Okay, I'll catch you for dinner though, yeah?" I asked a bit deflated. She simply nodded, still staring outside. I sighed again, got up and left to go map the Maze.

Kayla's POV

I couldn't tell him. He worried so much already, what with all that's happened so far. He didn't need this too. Maybe I'll tell Minho later. Yeah, that's what I'll do. He doesn't have as much on his plater as Newt does. Well, regarding me anyways. I just hate feeling like a burden.

"KAYLA!" someone shouted from downstairs. I made it to the landing before I spotted Jeff and Clint looking around and calling my name.

"Hey guys" I called down and jumped down the stairs to them.

"Guess what?" smiled Jeff.

"What?"

"You're the newest med-jack!" I grinned, before hugging each of the other "doctors".

"Wait, don't I have to try out all the jobs first though?" I asked. He shrugged.

"Alby said that since you were so good at it you're just going to work with us" replied Clint matter-of-factly.

"Oh, well, shall we get started then?" I grinned again. They nodded and led me out to the infirmary where I would begin my new life. If you could even call it that.

Hey guys! Hope you like this chapter! Once again I'm so sorry for not updating, but I'll be better I promise:)
