An hour later, I was working with Jeff, trying out the med-jack job. I was pretty good at it, and Jeff was really nice.
"I have to go find Alby and speak with him about some supplies. Do you think you could handle a cut on a Glader's arm? It isn't bad, just needs some bandages" inquired Jeff.
"Totally" I replied confidently. With a curt nod, Jeff left me in the infirm to treat this mystery Glader's arm. I walked down the hallway to the room with a shut door. Inside, a tall boy with a set jaw and a hard look on his face sat on the bed.
"Hi, I'm-" I began.
"Kayla, I know. You're the talk of the Glade. My name is Gally, in case you were wondering, which you were" he sent a smirk that set the hair on the back of my neck on end.
"Was I? I couldn't imagine why" I replied sarcastically while I cleaned and bandaged the wound on his arm. Gally just continued to smirk at me, creeping me out a bit more every time I glanced up to see him still staring. When I was finished, he stood up, towering over me.
"You can go whenever you like" I told him as I turned to leave and get out of there as quick as possible. Suddenly, Gally grabbed my arm and spun me around, smashing me against his chest.
"No, I think we should get to know each other better" he grinned evily. My eyes widened once I realized what he meant.
"No!" I raised my voice, but it cracked, throwing my fear out onto my sleeve. I tried to scream, but he covered my mouth with his dirty hand. Throwing me down on the bed, he started to beat me, and I just lay there and took it. I was no where near as strong as him. There was no way to fight back. What happened next surprised me. He removed my shorts. You can only guess what happened next. I don't want to describe it, but it hurt so so badly. I just sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. When he was finished, he dressed himself and left, leaving me in a puddle of blood and tears.
I'm pretty sure I was there for at least five hours. Nobody came. I later learned that Gally had told Jeff I was sleeping. Stupid boy. I hated Gally. Hated him with so much. The tears had stopped, but I was still shaking and shivering. I had skipped lunch and was starving. I redressed myself as fast as my aching muscles would allow. Looking out the small window, I spotted Ben entering the Glade from the Maze, chest heaving. Oh no! That meant Newt would be back soon, and would be wondering where I am, but I couldn't talk to anyone right then. I just wanted to be alone, but not in this room that would haunt my memories forever.
I left the infirmary and began crossing the center of the Glade, headed towards Newt and I's meeting place. I couldn't walk correctly though, my hips ached a lot. I was "walking" with my eyes cast to the ground trying not to think about what happened earlier, so I didn't notice Minho running at me until it was too late. He slammed into me, his broad chest knocking me flat on my back. I groaned, this only making my already sore body hurt even more.
"Oh shuck, sorry bout that Kayla" he apologized quickly. Suddenly his face twisted up, after giving me a once over. "Why do you look like someone just beat you to a pulp?". I couldn't hold it in. It was all too much. I began to sob again, surprising myself that there were more tears left inside me. I threw my arms over my eyes out of shame, just as Minho dropped to his knees and pulled me into a sitting position, resting me against his muscular shoulder and throwing an arm out to cover me.
"What's wrong with ya?" he questioned softly, but I couldn't answer, it was too soon to talk about it. I just continued sobbing while Minho tried to soothe me, but he was failing miserably. There was only one person here who could do that at a time like this. He lifted me and carried me to my room, setting me down softly on my sleeping bag, then ran off, the pounding of his footsteps echoing in my ear. My wails died down into sniffles, until Newt came bounding into the room.
When I saw him I broke down again and jumped into his arms, wrapping my legs around his waist. He said something to Minho that I didn't catch, and then sat down, placing me in his lap and wrapping two long arms around me. I hugged him extremely tightly and cried into his neck. I was so glad he was there. Newt rubbed slow, calming circles on my back until my tears subsided. He unraveled his arms from my small frame, but kept me seated in his lap. Minho then returned with a bowl of water and some medical bandages. I hadn't even noticed he had left. He handed them to Newt and then sat down across from him and I. Newt then gingerly patched up all of my cuts and bruises with the lightest touches until I was good as new. Physically, not emotionally. I was scarred for good.
"Alright love, care to tell us what happened?" whispered Newt. I glanced between the two boys, seeing the fear in their eyes, before slowly nodding with a gulp. They stared at me intently as I told them the whole story, from when Jeff left up until Minho found me, my voice only cracking a few times. Both were fuming by the end of my terrifying tale, and I could have sworn steam came out of Minho's ears.
"You're staying with me in my room from now on, okay?" says Newt, standing and pulling me up. I was okay with that, I knew that Newt would never hurt me. I trusted Minho too.
"Thank you" I whispered, grabbing the two around their midsections and hugging them. They smiled, before Minho picked me up and threw me onto his back and began to run. I squealed and laughed, pounding my fists on his back lightly. Newt followed close behind, laughing along with us. Minho ran all the way to the Kitchens before putting me down gently. I stuck my tongue out at him and he mimicked me.
"You are such children" sighed Newt. I cracked up, before jumping into the line of boys waiting for food. Newt and Minho joined me quickly. It was fun, and there were a few pretty intense games of Rock, Paper, Scissors that helped me forget about the earlier events.
All of a sudden, somebody bumped into me from behind, so I turned around to apologize, but all that came out was a gasp. My face drained of color and I backed up quickly, slamming into Minho. My eyes were still trained on Gally, who was glaring at me, and if looks could kill, I would be dead. Minho turned when he felt me crash into him, and when he saw Gally staring me down he quickly shoved me behind his huge body, and into Newt's waiting arms. He held me close to his front, one arm around my waist and the other across my chest. I pressed myself as hard as I could against Newt, needing some comfort. I could feel his chest rising and falling behind my head with each steady breath he took.
