Chapter 28 || Heathers
"Greetings Heathers family." Kevin addressed the cast from the stage. "Now, before we start today, there's been a slight change in our creative team. You all know Evelyn Evernever has been helping me produce the musical. But I've also asked Evelyn to step up and be my co-director."
Evelyn stood up and sat up on the stage beside Kevin, grinning excitedly. I had no quarrel with the Farm or its Farmies, but I had an uneasy feeling about Evelyn herself. Something just seemed off about her.
"What?" Betty exclaimed from beside Veronica. "Kevin, no, you always direct the musical alone."
"Which has been incredibly stressful, Betty." Kevin countered. "Especially after last year's events."
"Can we just not talk about Midge?" Fangs sighed. "Please?"
"No." Kevin said, turning to look at Evelyn briefly. "How about we do a rundown of everybody's parts, catch Evelyn up to speed?"
"I'm playing Veronica Sawyer," I spoke. "Outcast turned Heather turned outcast again."
"Hi, I'm Sweet Pea." Sweets boomed, making me giggle. "Um, playing JD, Veronica Sawyer's bad boy love interest."
"Reggie Mantle." Reggie stated. "AKA jock Ram Sweeny. Gonna bro it up with my bud Arch here, just two single straight dudes doing some theater."
"Put a sock in it, Mantle." I huffed, throwing my shoe at him.
"I said I was sorry!" Reggie yelled, throwing my shoe back at me. I rolled my eyes and turned to a very amused looking Kevin.
"Given how much dancing there is in Heathers," He continued as if I hadn't thrown a shoe. "Evelyn and I felt we should bring on a choreographer, so give a big Heathers hello to Riverdale's resident fly girl, Toni Topaz!"
I clapped out of respect for Kevin and Evelyn, but otherwise ignored the happenings on stage between the co-directors, choreographer, and leading lady. Reggie and Sweet Pea made their way over to me, one looking amused, and the other looking slightly scared.
"Why are we throwing shoes at Mantle?" Sweet Pea asked, looking down at me with an amused grin.
"He spilled a secret that wasn't his." I huffed, looking over at Reggie.
"I said I was sorry." He offered.
"Yeah," I nodded. "But that didn't really help matters, did it?"
"No." He muttered.
"Thought not." I shrugged, looking back at Kevin and Evelyn.
"Okay, everyone!" Evelyn said, clapping her hands. "Follow me."
We followed the enthusiastic girl into the student lounge, where she instructed us to lay on the floor and close our eyes. I laid out beside Reggie and Veronica, crossing my ankles and resting my hands on my stomach.
"Everything in your lives matters." Evelyn spoke soothingly, walking around us as she did so. "There are universal truths within each of your personal experiences. A you inside of me, a me inside of you. In rehearsal, we are going to explore our own traumas and experiences and exorcise them through our art."
"All right," Kevin interrupted, clapping his hands. "Cheryl, Veronica, Betty, 'Candy Store', set and costumes are ready. Go get changed."
We all pulled ourselves off the floor and followed after Kevin. When we got back into the auditorium, we sat in the audience while Betty, Veronica, and Cheryl got into their costumes.
