Chapter 40 || The End

The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor beside me was the first thing I heard when I came to. The second sound I heard was the snores of the three men at my bedside, followed by a collectively softer group of snores from the other side of the bed. When I opened my eyes, I focused on the men beside me.

Sweet Pea, Jughead, and my father were leaning against each other, all snoring with their heads leaned all the way back. I turned my head to the right and focused on the pile of girls curled up on the couch in the hospital room I was in. Veronica, Betty, Toni, and Cheryl were sprawled across each other, all snoring as well. I glanced at the clock in the room and noticed it was four in the morning, which meant that I'd been here over 24 hours at least.

The next thing I noticed was the pain in my right shoulder, which made me hiss silently. Instead of waking up one of the people in the room, I pressed the nurse button on the bed while simultaneously pressing the button that allowed me to sit up.

"Oh, Miss Jones." A nice looking nurse greeted, alerting everyone in the room. "I wasn't expecting to see you for another couple of hours."

"Surprise." I croaked, causing everyone to jump up and approach my bedside. "Can I have some water please?"

"Of course." The nurse smiled at me before turning to the herd of people. "Keep away from her bedside if you're going to stand."

At once, everyone scrambled for a seat close to the bed. The nurse nodded to herself before going to get me some water. The first person to speak to me was Jughead.

"You're actually insane, you know that?" Jughead exploded. "I can't believe how reckless you are, especially after everything we went through with Kurtz. You're the most selfless person in the world, and it's going to bite us all in the ass."

"Here's your water." My nurse said, holding a large cup of water beneath me with a straw extended toward my mouth. I took a long sip and nodded in thanks to her. "Before your brother goes back to yelling at you, I need to ask you a few questions."

"Shoot." I said, noticing the people tense around me. "Come on, guys. I made it, let me make a joke."

"How's your pain?" My nurse asked, holding in a laugh.

"Tolerable." I said. "But I just woke up, so that might change."

"You don't need a higher dosage?" She asked, gesturing to the IV drip beside the bed.

"Not at the moment." I shook my head, wincing as my shoulder moved slightly. "Just the water."

"Alright, I'll be at the nurse's station if you need me." She smiled. "Just hit the button."

"Thank you." I smiled softly. "I'm sure these guys will take care of me before you can even make it here."

"Good luck." The nurse laughed, ducking out of the room. I turned toward Jughead carefully, wary of the soreness in my shoulder.

"Why would you sacrifice yourself?" Jughead pressed, glaring at me.

"I would always sacrifice my life for yours, Jughead." I stated.

"Well, neither of you put yourself in situations that require that choice anymore." Dad interjected, reaching for my left hand. "You're crazy, Kitty."

"I know." I nodded slightly. "I'm sorry I scared you."

"I'm going to keep you locked in the house for the rest of your life." Dad sniffed, squeezing my hand.

"If you don't, I will." Sweet Pea huffed from beside my dad.
