"I said black" Sliding the milky coffee toward the detective.
Lights blared in the small musty room. Window so small on the door you could only see shades of people walking passed.
"You idiot" He hands the coffee over to his assistant standing by the door. "Sorry about that. He's new"
He had a gentle smile like a grandpa would have during the holidays. Like he knew nothing about me. But I knew who he was. He had been tracking me for weeks. They all had. I looked at the mirror behind him. Probably hiding 10 or more personnel. They had hit the jackpot. Case and study. I prepared for the worst.
"Let's start with the easy questions shall we? What were you doing at Mr. David Mulligins house at 12 in the morning?"
I stare at his face hard. Still leaned back with my arms crossed tight against my chest. I'm not getting that coffee am I?
"Listen, the sooner you talk, the sooner I can help you"
"No. That's my job. You don't help people. You want to know what you do? You set criminals free and ignore victims everyday. You will never know me. But I know everything about you." I sit back. Ice cold as can be. I was really backed into a corner here. I've never been a spectacle.
"We found these in Mr. Mulligins house" He slide over some photos of the tortured girls. "Were you one of his victims?"
Not all of them showed faces. Mainly restraints so tight that they were bleeding from the ties alone. I looked away.
"We found his body" I swallow. My breathing gets faster. I've been dreading this day and I didn't even know it. I never thought I'd hear these words. Not this close.
"We can say it was self defense. You have all the evidence of his crimes. But I need to know your story..." He lowers his head looking for my eyes. Almost as if he wants to take my hand. but I don't budge.
"Okay then. Moving onto the next case. Do you know this girl?" He pulls out a photograph. The one of me on the news. My eyes almost widen but I try not to react.
"No" I say calmly shifting my gaze. But it looks so much like me.
"There have been a string of attacks linking to the woman in this photo. We don't know if this is related but, as you know, we are cross checking" He looks me square in the eye. No more good cop.
"This one" He pushes the photo closer to my face. "Is a whole other story. More punishable than the other. If you had anything to do with this case, you'd be looking at close to life in prison. So which one will it be?"
"I wasn't one of Davids victims. but I know someone who is" Ughh. My partner would kill me for opening my mouth.. That's the first time I've called him that.. And the last.
"So you went there to get revenge for them? Why didn't they just report it to the police?"
Why do you think? "Because yall are shit" I raise an obvious eye brow. Clearly making him mad.
"This is serious miss Burigard!" He stands up slamming both fists on the table. "A man has been murdered!"
"A MONSTER HAS GOTTEN WHAT HE DESERVED" I claw back.
"Is that all? Then if you have nothing more to say I have no choice. Take her away"
Two police guards come in grabbing me by the arms. "Wait!"
This can't be how it ends. How did I think it would end?
"Miss Burigard You are being charged with two accounts of breaking and entering as well as murder. You may hire an attorney or if you can not afford one an attorney will be appointed.."
