Edaphosaurus was a herbivorous synapsid from the early Permian. It was preyed on by carnivorous synapsids like dimetrodon. It was around the size of a hippo, making it among the megafauna, but it was an easy target for predators. It was outcompeted by newer carnivores during the late Permian.
