Gastornis was the herbivore ruler of the Eocene. It had a beak hard enough to crack a coconut, as well as kill a leptictidium. It was in a group of killer birds named terror birds. The mammals eventually grew into huge predators and wiped the terror birds into South America. When it made a bridge with North America, smilodon moved over and wiped out the terror birds.
