Edaline POV:

Sophie was sad today.

She stumbled down the stairs in her pajamas, and sat down in her chair.

Edaline snapped her fingers to conjure Sophie's favorite breakfast, a purple mushy root.

But Sophie just picked at it.

Edaline looked at her daughter weirdly. Why wasn't she eating? Nightmare? Stress?

"Hey, Mom?"

Edaline smiled at the name.

"Do elves celebrate New Year's Eve?" Sophie looked straight into Edaline's eyes with her big brown doe orbs.

"New Year's Eve? What's that, kiddo?" Asked Grady, coming up behind Edaline and placing a warm hand on her shoulder.

"Well, you know how the Earth goes around the sun--"

"Yeah, and it takes a year."

Sophie nodded. "Well, humans wait until midnight and count down. Then, they shout, 'Happy New Year!'"

Grady and Edaline looked at her weirdly.

Sophie looked back and forth between them for a few seconds, then sighed and went back to picking at her food.

"Forget it."

Edaline and Grady shared a look, and an unspoken idea passed between them.

Sophie POV:

When Sophie was living with her human family, they would play board games and watch the ball drop every New Year's Eve. They would drink Champagne, well, the adults would, and the kids would drink Martinelli.

The Fosters would occasionally go to a party, which Sophie, being both a telepath and extremely introverted, absolutely despised. The overload of drunken thoughts would batter her brain until she almost passed out.

Sophie had hoped that Elvin celebrations would be quieter and more fun.

But what she didn't expect was that they wouldn't exist at all.

She sulked through her day, pouting while doing her chores and sighing during meals.

Grady and Edaline had disappeared around 3 o'clock on "errands" and told Sandor to get Sophie to bed by ten.

Sandor had delivered on that order.

Sophie begged him to play a board game or something with her, but he just shook his head with a small, knowing smile, completed his nightly sweep of her room, and pushed her through the door.

Sophie sat down on her bed and sighed.

She looked at her iPod to check the time.

9:57.

She had around 2 hours to pass. She decided to practice telepathy exercises.
