It was Valentine's day.

That was the only thing Sophie could think of as she felt the blood slowly leave her body.

It would be too late this time, even for Elwin. She stood no chance.

The door slammed open, and Keefe flew to her side.

"Foster? W-what..." His eyes widened as he stuttered and looked around at the pool of blood the love of his life was laying in.

Sophie looked at him with big, sympathetic eyes. "Gethen still had his sword."

Keefe let out a sob. "We have to get you to Elwin!"

Sophie giggled. "We're too far. How did you even find me?"

"Your emotions spiked and- and I felt it and- s-so I ra-ran through the ha-halls and I-I found you in this class-classroom and--"

"Oh. Well, sorry Keefe, but you can't save me." Sophie looked at Keefe with pity, the boy was still staring at her blood. "Look at me," she ordered.

When he still didn't acknowledge, she glanced up at Ro, who stood in the doorway in horror. "Lift his head please."

Ro stepped over and held Keefe's head up. He finally looked into her eyes.

"Please Sophie," he begged, "please don't leave me, please, I love you, I love you!"

It's Valentine's Day, Sophie thought.

Sophie was surprised. "You do?"

Keefe let out a sob-laugh and nodded. "Since I first saw you stumbling around the halls."

Sophie let her head drop to the ground and laughed. "I love you too."

It's Valentine's Day.

Keefe sobbed harder.

Sophie turned her head. "Please don't cry..."

"Sorry, sorry, just please don't leave me Sophie, please."

"I'll never leave you, Keefe. I promise."

Two minutes and seventeen seconds later, Sophie Elizabeth Foster was dead.

Keefe's body was found at the bottom of Candleshade a day later. The council said he lost his balance and fell off the roof.

Ro and Bo became king and queen. Ro didn't even try to fight. She kind of wished her Lord Hunkyhair was in the audience at the coronation, smirking while whispering the Ballad of Bo and Ro.

Nobody ever told the ogre princes and princesses why mommy never smiled.

The only time she showed emotion was when someone brought up her 'failed assignment.' she usually just left the room, tears threatening to fall down her face.

She also had a brand new fear of blood.

Dex's dimples rarely ever showed.

Biana hid her scars again, and stayed invisible more than necessary.

Fitz hated everything. He lost both of his best friends.

Tam, Linh, and Wylie weren't as affected, but were a lot quieter.

Marella's fire lost control more often than not.

Maruca was just confused.

Stina was more affected than one would think. She never again raised her voice or bullied anyone.

Amy heard. Her parents wondered why she got depression, but treated it anyway.

The Black Swan won, but only because Gisela was in shock.

The Black Swan never put Project Moonlark down as a fail. They even unconsciously turned toward where Sophie would have been when plans were being made.

Silveny and her family stayed at Havenfield, where Grady and Edaline were grieving again.

The Elvin world went on as if Sophie never showed up.

But she did.

And she and Keefe watched as everyone grieved for them.

It was Valentine's Day.
