SIX: CAL

Soon as Mare got better she decided to rest. She needs it. But I need to chat with Dane.

He was in his room but we decided to walk around the castle.

"I've heard about Mare's father. What horrible thing happened. She must be devastated." Dane sighed.
"Yeah, she is. Her father is very important for her. He has fought for her since he came back from the war.'' I looked at him.
"My healers are already taking care of him. I'm sure he'll be fine."
"I hope as well." I say while I sight.
"Anyway, are you excited for the news with the Nortan Republic?'' He asked.
''Oh, I wanted to discuss something with you.''
''Well, I'm all ears.'' He agreed.
''So, as we discussed this morning, we are going to make the Republic public. And I was thinking: aren't the silvers going to be furious and then rebel against us?''
''They may get furious but I doubt they will go rougue. There aren't many of them left. However, Piedmont won't accept us either.''
''We can't forget that they are vicious, they can gather everyone and attack.'' He said thoughtful.
''There's a lot to think about'' I said looking down. ''We can't afford to.''
''We are going to do this Tiberias. Together.'' His hand pressing my shoulder.
''Thank you Davidson.''
''You're welcome Cal.''

I looked at the part of the castle where the rooms were. I saw Mare looking through the window of her room.

''I better check on Mare...''
''Go.'' He said.

As got in Mare's room, she was still looking through the window.

''Hey, are you better?''

She turned around and I could see that she had rested.

''Yeah, I could say that. Well, I'm going to visit my dad and family after dinner, okay?''
''Alright. Do you want me to go with you? Just if you want, obviously.''
''Like I said later...yes.'' She looked at me with a half a smile.

I look at the clock to see what time was it. Five o'clock.

''I'm going to my room to take a shower.'' I said while walking to the door.
''See you later Mare.'' I said exiting her room.
''See you Cal.''


After dinner, I needed to talk with Mare.

My head was full of things. Had to let them out.

At the table she was by my side, so I talked quickly with her.

''Um Mare, can we talk later?''
''Yeah, sure...''

She seemed worried but we continued eating.

''Well, what do you want to talk about?'' She questioned quite curious.
''I wanted to ask if...you want to go to Norta with me for the ...''
''Oh Cal...'' She interrupted me before I could even continue.
''I know that your father isn't well and I will understand if you doesn't want to come with me. But it would mean a lot if to me...I can't do this without you by my side."
''When are you leaving?'' She said looking anywhere but me.
''In two days. And Davidson is coming with me.''
''My father may leave the nursery tomorrow's evening. So, if he gets better I may be able to come with you.'' She said looking in my eyes.
''You can decide this after.''
''Okay then...I'll tell you tomorrow.''
''So, let's go to the nursery?'' I said looking into her eyes while rubbing my fingers on her arm.
''Yeah...'' she said looking down.
''Hey, it's okay. I'm coming with you. Don't be scared.'' I said trying to calm her.
''Thanks Cal, for supporting me.'' She said already on the way.

We entered in the nursery and I quickly saw her father.

He seemed bad.

Mare sat on the bed by his side with tears streaming down my face.

''H-Hi dad...I hope you can hear me.''

Suddenly, he opened his eyes and turned his head to Mare's side.

''Oh gosh...Dad?'' She said holding his hand.

Sara showed up at his side, just to make sure he would stay fine.

''Hi...Mare.'' He said with a raspy voice.

She said nothing. She was shocked.

''Cal...'' I hear him calling me.

I went from the door to his side, beside Mare.

''Yes Daniel...'' I say trying not to tremble.
''I don't have too much time left...'' Mare was crying on my chest. ''Will you take care of my girl for me, when I'm gone?'' He said crying too.
''Yes...yes I will.'' I say with my eyes watering.

In an instant the machines switched down.

Mare knew what happened.

''Dad, DAD?'' She shouted while crying hard.

Sara and her nurses tried to help him but there wasn't anything that they could do for Daniel.

''Our power isn't working. His body is rejecting our healing.'' Sara said.

Mare's family showed up at the door, even Diana.

''We're going.'' I said to Sara and Mare's family.

I got Mare in my arms since she couldn't walk and we went to her room.

When we got there, I put her to bed and held her.

''He's gone Cal...I am NEVER going to be able to see him again.'' She said while crying hard and loudly.
''Mare...you really need to calm down or you are going to pass out, you are very stressed.'' I said while rubbing her hair.

She took long breaths to calm down.

''Mare...'' I said, grabbing her face. ''I've lost my parents too. I know how you're feeling. But you're strong and you are going to get over it.''
"Y-You really think so?" She said crying more but she was more calm than before.
"You are the strongest person I know..." I said giving her a kiss on her forehead.
''Well, Idon't know if I'm going to heal fast...b-but one thing I'm sure is that we need to go to Norta and make that Republic happen.'' She said determined.
''I'll do what you want.'' I said looking into her eyes.

She was so tired of what happened that day that the only thing I could say was:

''You better rest.''

I lay her on the bed and she curled up under the blankets.

"I love you dad, so much..." She whispered to herself already half asleep.
Her breathing got rhythmic, meaning she was sleeping. Well, I did the same thing.
