The rain was coming down harder as I sat against my window, looking out into the back yard. The sky was black and there were no stars, but I felt calm watching the rain hit the window. The sound was comforting. It made me feel as if nothing in the world mattered except the rain and the God who created it. I saw my reflection in the window, and a sudden feeling of loneliness swept over my entire body. Dahlia and Brent and Becca and Zack were probably all together on a rainy day like tonight. I was alone, sitting in my room. It amazed me that I could be surrounded by people all the time yet still feel alone.
All of my life, all that I had ever dreamed of was falling in love and getting married. When I reached my tenth grade year and I still wasn't dating anyone, I got discouraged. Now, as a senior, I felt broken. I prayed day in and day out that God would give me a boyfriend, and seeing everything work out so perfectly for my friends, and not me, answered that prayer for me. I still thanked God for all of his blessings, but I couldn't understand why he would avoid answering the prayer that I had been praying for so long.
I was in the midst of collecting my thoughts when I heard the door behind me open. I spun around and saw my two friends standing at the door in front of me. They both looked as if they had been crying, although they were both too far away for me to know for sure. I hopped up from my seat at the window and greeted them.
"Hey, guys. What are y'all doing here?" I asked, hugging them both. They both looked at each other and then back at me.
"Dahlia needs to talk to your mom," Becca said. Dahlia, standing behind her looked pale, almost as if she was about to pass out. I had never seen her look this way. She was always wore a mask of strength and confidence, even if there was no way that that was how she felt.
"She is asleep, but I can go get her. Is everything okay?"
"She needs to talk to her." Becca kept answering for Dahlia, which was very strange. Dahlia also always answered for herself.
"Alright," I said as I went to my mom's bedroom. It was late at night, so she was already in bed.
"Mom?" I asked when I walked into the room. My dad was already snoring, but she was sitting in her bed on her phone.
"Yeah?" She asked, putting her phone down. She turned the lamp on beside her and looked at me.
"Dahlia and Becca are here. I think that they need to talk to you."
"This late at night? How long have they been here?" She asked.
"They just got here. It sounds important," I answered. I tried to keep my voice from breaking, but I couldn't. I was too confused. What was wrong with Dahlia, and why did she need to speak with my mom? My mind wandered from things like sickness and boyfriend problems when I finally landed on the solution. Was she pregnant?
"Oh, God. Please no," I prayed as I followed my mom back to my room.
When we walked into the room, they were both sitting on opposite sides of the room, staring at each other.
"Hey, Mrs. Carla," Becca said when we entered into the room.
"Hey girls. Is everything alright?" My mom asked. She had on her pajama pants and a large shirt.
"Yes, but Dahlia needs to speak to you. Alone," Becca answered as she walked over to me. "Are you thirsty? I'm thirsty."
She dragged my arm until I followed her out of the room. She led me out to her car and I hopped in, although I had no idea what was going on. I knew that there was something that Dahlia and Becca were keeping from me, although I wasn't sure what it was.
