thankful you're my day one

Dear Leon,
You will always be so much in my life. I'm most fortunate to have met you in the best years of our lives. Then, we were young, innocent and unbounded by all pressures of life.
Do you remember how we first met? I do.
You were the kid from next door who had accidentally kicked a ball over the fence and hit my head, hard. Mom said you were feeling really remorseful because when Katherine and Paul dragged you over to apologise, you broke down in tears when you saw me in a sobbing mess. I wasn't sure who actually won the crying contest. (Psst, I was damn sure that my four-year-old self cried louder than you). Though that fragment of memory was vague, the impact felt would never be forgotten.
Just like that ball, your presence struck fast into my life so unexpectedly that my heart didn't have a chance to say no.
Call it love at first sight because I loved you the moment I met you. Regardless of me being four years old or fifty years old, I'd always yearn for you. And no matter on which part the world I may be, I'd always want to be with you. That being said, I'm sure you knew that I followed you throughout my life, entering every school you went to just because I wanted to be a step closer to you.
During middle school, we got lost in the woods during a family trip. Out of fear, I almost bawled my eyes out but you held onto my hand and walked me back to where our tents were. You said that you'd always be there for me. Thinking back at that, I want to tell you that I would never leave you too.
