If there was one thing Deanna Adesso thought she could rely on, it was the half empty, seventy-five year old bottle of brandy sitting on top of her desk. Aiden, her personal assistant, had retrieved the old brandy from his collection during his break, and had waltzed into her office with two glasses, half an hour earlier.
Five days. Five days until I see them again. Until I see him again. Why oh why does God hate me? She downed the partially filled glass in her hand in one gulp, the liquid smoothly sliding down her throat. The alcohol was not doing what she hoped it would. It had not distracted her one bit from her thoughts.
The sound of a knock brought her out of her reverie and Aiden came in, a sympathetic smile on his face as he softly shut the door behind him, before sitting down on the chair in front of her desk."I've arranged for you to have dinner tomorrow night with Dimitri and Isabella for six o'clock sharp, at the usual." Aiden poured himself a glass of brandy before refilling hers and toasting.
'To the shitty up coming week,' he toasted. Both of them downed their glasses instantly and sighed."Are you gonna be okay, Deanna? I can handle the meeting with them if you want? Say your out of town?" Aiden was Dimitri and Isabella Conti's cousin, whom she went to university with. The man was a genius when it came to finance, and anything business related, that it was a wonder why he never started his own company. Aiden had claimed his lack of interest in starting one, stating that he'd rather not shoulder all that responsibility. The Adessos and Contis had been friends for generations, and their gatherings often include extended family. She and Aidan had developed a good friendship, and he was easily her best-friend.
"No, it's okay. They know I'm in town. If I leave now, then it'll look like I'm trying to avoid Theo." Aiden gave an awkward cough as reached up to loosen his tie.
"But you are trying to avoid Theo." She sent Aiden a glare and he grinned."Are you here to help me, or make me feel even worse? Are you sure this brandy even has alcohol in it? I don't feel any different." Deanna sighed as she refilled both their glasses.
"It does. You're just not feeling it since your alcohol tolerance is like a never ending blackhole."
"So is yours. And may I add, who I should blame my high tolerance for alcohol on?" Deanna raised a brow at Aiden as she reached for her glass and toasted at him, before downing her drink. Aiden may not have his own business per se, but he did have a thing for alcohol. He wasn't an alcoholic, and neither was she, but both had a taste for fine alcohol, especially Aiden, since his family owned a distillery and a vineyard that could be traced back for hundreds of years. Their friends often thought that the two of them were alcoholics, considering the amount of time they spent at the Conti estate with all that alcohol around, but they weren't. The only time they would actually drink was during parties, or when they were "taste testing" a new batch, with the exception of today, that is."Look, Deanna, I just wanna make sure your up to this. I know things haven't been the same since-"
"Since nothing, Aiden. It was one drunken night, and he doesn't remember a thing. We're not even sure of what really happened that night. Besides, the day after, he left. There's nothing more to it than that." Deanna dismissed. Aiden shook his head. He wouldn't believe me if my life depended on it. We both know how I felt and what a stupid mistake that night was. And how foolish it was of me to still want Theo after.
