Through Strife

On a cold dark morning, you swept my tears away.
You told me, "It'll all be okay."
And again I asked my five word pact
I said, "How do you know that?"
And yet again you put up with my eternal wails
Later, you whispered,
"Because not all love fails."

After that day, I would spend not a minute apart,
From you, the young man who had stolen my heart.
But then, the worst news  that could have come, came;
Your sister had jumped in front of a speeding train.

I'm not a perfect thing--I have wronged before
But don't we all have the same chance to move forward?
And now that my atonement is solemnly due
I just have the the words given to me, from you,
"Don't you worry your pretty little mind
People throw rocks at things that shine
And life makes love look hard
Fate is not a destiny set in stars"

We rushed to Oregon, a red eye flight
And our stomachs churned, as we saw her gruesome sight
You picked up her locket and said, "I'll stay"

In the coming days was a funeral
On a beautiful summer noon-- the sky clear and blue
But a grieving family stained the grass
In their now appropriate morning black
After they left, we strode to the headstone
Down you kneeled, to the fresh cut loam
Newly engraved, under the dates
We're the words I hadn't heard so often of late
"Don't you worry your pretty little mind:
People throw rocks at things that shine,
And life makes love look hard.
Fate is not destiny set in stars"

Soon after we had gotten home, a call came
It was time to go, for you
Men were being drafted into action
It came too quick for me to really have a reaction
But now that your smiling face is gone,
The world is harder than we really let on.

In a couple of months, there is a ceasefire,
But no one comes home
The army finally can get out the troops'
Letters to the families of the soldiers who now salute
A flag that they stare at with hollow eyes
And with hearts that are now empty inside

I see your words to me and nearly rejoice
Then regain composure for one last choice;
Should I open this envelope that may say your love has decayed?
Or should it matter at all, to at least see what you say?

In the kitchen, I grab a knife,
And with great struggle, open my strife
And pull out a yellowed letter from you,
And read it slowly-- on every letter, I chew
One line stands out from the rest,
And makes me get jitters in my chest
So overjoyed with euphoria, I might add
That I yell out a response to you,
"I still love you too!"

No matter what happens, no matter how far,
I remember just who you are
You are mine, and I, your's
I don't care how, but I'll see you soon.

So don't you worry your pretty little mind
People throw rocks at things that shine
And life makes love look hard
Fate is not a destiny set in stars

It may have been a while since I'd met you last
You'd had to leave, when war came fast
But you told me,
"I will come back"
And then I'd asked,
"How do you know that?"
And you said,
"'Cause love lasts."
Then you said the words that pulled at my heartstrings
It was the final last thing
To bring me over the edge
And into happy-tears,

"Don't you worry your pretty little mind
People throw rocks at things that shine
And life makes love look hard
Fate is not a destiny set in stars"
