It had been a few days since I was face to face with Joseph Jameson in Tommy's office. Tommy and I stayed up for hours talking about my Mother, Charlie was restless in the night so he stayed up with us too, Tommy showed me pictures of Grace, he told me she used to work for the Irish as a secret agent but she left that life behind to marry Tommy and to have Charlie. As the night turned into day Charlie had fallen asleep and Tommy was very tired but I realised that when Tommy was tired he was very loving, he held both Charlie and I in his arms, holding us both tightly like we were going to slip away...
Two days later I walked through the school gates clutching this morning's News paper I had brought with the bit of money Tommy gave me this morning when John picked me up for school, Tommy always found it strange that I loved to read so much.
I headed over to the tree that was in the playground, I sat down and opened up the paper and began to read it; Over the past few weeks I had been trying to find out who this Joseph Jameson was, he was contastanly on Tommy's mind, and no matter which family member came over Joseph Jameson was all they would talk so I thought maybe reading the paper would help but turns out another mystery was unfolding im Birmingham... Children were going missing?
"It's strange right," A voice spoke up.
I looked up and saw my friend Daniel. "What is?" I asked.
Daniel sat down next to me. "Those children that have been going missing, are they really runaways or were they taken?" He asked.
I sighed. "I don't know, it is very strange," I mumbled. "Why would these children run away, better question why would all these twelve children run away?"
"They didn't run away!" Our friend Johnny spoke up. "Not a chance, me Ma said they were taken!"
Daniel and I shared a confused look. "Taken?" Daniel asked. "Why would someone take twelve children?"
"Daniels right, why would someone want that many children?" I asked.
Johnny shrugged. "Who knows, but has anyone noticed Henry isn't here yet?" He asked.
My heart stopped as I looked around the playground. Johnny was right, Henry wasn't here, he was always here early since his Dad was a policeman he was always dropped off early. The three of us picked up our bags and began racing around the playground asking the other children if they had seen him but no one had seen him since we left school yesterday.
"CHILDREN LINE UP!" Our teacher Mrs Porter called.
I ran over to our teacher. "Mrs Porter, Mrs Porter, Henry isn't here!" I announced. "Is he okay?"
Mrs Porter looked down with sadness. "I'm sorry Miss Shelby but Henry was reported missing late last night when he did not return home from school," She explained.
"What?" I asked in shock.
Mrs Porter nodded. "As was Eleanor Downs," She added.
I looked at the line of children behind me and saw the two gaps in the line were Henry and Eleanor would be... Where were they?
"Mrs Porter who is taking the children?" A boy named Jack asked.
"No one is taking children, they are runaways!" She told us.
I frowned. "No Miss, Henry wouldn't run away, he loved his Family!" I told her in a bold voice then held up the news paper. "All these children couldn't have run away!"
"Exactly Miss, what's going on?" Daniel asked. "Are we safe here?"
"That is enough, of course you are all safe here!" Mrs Porter told us. "The school is one of the safest places to be. Now everyone inside!"
