Three girls whom couldn't be more different all sat in the Cypress Bay Academy library one dreary winter morning. It was a Saturday and not one of them wanted to be here.Kate Wright, your classic nerd, what could she have done to get in trouble? Well maybe you should ask that boy who wouldn't shut up during their maths exam how his testicular retrieval surgery went.
Laurie Todd, speedway racing party girl, now there's a character who has an attitude that fits the detention aesthetic. Caught skipping class to go down to the race track last week.
Julia Briar, the artistically grungy hippie, someone who wasn't new to detention, left a nice little quote scrawled across the gym walls with spray paint.
The three girls were in a situation that seemed like it was taken right out the plot of the breakfast club. They were to spend the morning in the library writing a two page essay on why they shouldn't have done what they did. And of course the only one actually participating in the work was Kate.
•
The girls sat in the library in a bit of an awkward silence. Laurie was leaned back on her plastic chair with her feet up on the fake wood table trying to sleep away the detention time. Whereas Kate was sitting up properly with a started essay laying in front of her, but her mind was off with the fairies and she was chewing the end of her pen. Julia on the other hand was sprawled out on the floor with her doc martens raised up on the chair she was supposed to be sitting at.
Kate looked down at Julia who was tapping her hands against the carpet floor in a rhythmic pattern.
"Not to be rude but could you shoosh, I am trying to write here!" Kate says in the sort of voice one would use to talk to a small child.
"Apologies, but I am bored," Julia whines as she puts her hands up in mock surrender before sitting up and saying: "We should play truth or dare!"
This also gets Kate's attention because they're in high school, only bitches who wanna make you spill your secrets play truth or dare. Laurie on the other hand was just trying to block it all out and get some shut eye.
"Listen mate why would we wanna play truth or dare, we don't even know each other. And besides I am tired." Laurie mumbles from behind her arms that were draped across her face.
"That's exactly why we should play truth or dare! If we're gonna spend a whole day with each other we may as well get to know one another." Julia answers looking up at the girls from the floor.
"Alright I dare you to be quite so I can sleep." Laurie snaps. Kate raises her eyebrows in a 'oh damn' fashion and goes back to writing the essay. Julia just sighs and mumbles; "Alright no need to freak." Before laying back down on the floor.
Laurie's eyes soften.
"Sorry I didn't mean to snap, s'just my folks said they would take my guitar away if I didn't fix my attitude towards school this semester and I really don't think getting a detention for skipping helps that." Laurie sighs and runs her hands through her golden locks.
"What did you do to get detention?" Kate asks putting her pencil down and turning her attention to the blonde.
"No one cares about that! You have a guitar, I am guessing that means you play?" Julia asks as she once again sits up and grins at the others.
"Yeah I do play, and I got busted for skipping class, it was just home economics so I am not sure why anyone cared!" Laurie laughs answering both questions.
"That's suck what sorta guitar is it?" Julia asks fully invested in the conversation.
"Just your classic instrumental acoustic. I also sing!" Laurie smiles, glad she found someone clearly as passionate about music.
"I play bass!" Kate whispers from her spot, feeling kinda left out from the sudden connection the other two girls were having.
"No way, you of all people play bass!" Laurie smiles and states as Julia moves off the ground and onto the chair so she can ask more questions about the girls instruments.
"Well hey she's got enough spunk to pull it off! And I play drums by the way." Julia says as she leans in. Ye three girls smile and continue on talking about various bands and music types. And here we have it. Those three girls who were totally different, maybe not so different after all!
